putting shifter back in-where does paper clip looking wire go?

Has anyone put a shifter back in that knows what to do with the wire, that looks like the end of a paperclip? I pushed it off to the drivers side with a screwdriver and the shifter went into place but I wanted to make sure that this is where it goes. It's in an 87' RX-7 base model, non turbo, manual trans. Thanks for any help.

The spring, 'paperclip' pushes the shifter to the left, when the shifter is properly installed.

This is not exactly your question, but MazdaTrix has a great page about putting in their short shifter with good pictures which may help.

thanks for the help. So when you say it pushes the shifter to the left than does it go to the right of the shifter. Would having it in the wrong spot make the trans. not shift? I put in a new flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing and pressure plate and now it won't shift-trying to figure out why-could it possibly be the wire?

When running it wont go into gear. It feels like maybe the new pressure plate (racing beat street/strip) is too strong for the slave to open-also maybe the throwout bearing is in the wrong way-not sure, might have to take trans back out.

odd, have someone look at the slave while someone in the car is pushing on it just to make sure it's moving the full way, maby it needs a bleed?

already bleed it. It's a racing beat street/strip clutch, someone else said someting about grinding it-if so would have been nice for racing beat to tell you that.

racing beatusually uses spacers that they'll send you with the kit. I dont know if its only in comonation with a lightweight flywheel though. If they didn't send you the spacers, it's probably something on your end. Is the clutch on the right direction?

Yeah, i put it on with a new lightweight flywheel and did use the small spacers. Have had other people ask if I put in the clutch backwards but I remember thinking that when i put it in and it only went one way.
