Pushing the 215/60R14 Tire Size

Just bought an 87 which has 215/60R14 tires that need to be replaced. If I want to keep the original rims, can I safely increase the tire size and if so, to what size?

I should have noted in my original message that the previous owner replaced the 185/70R-14 OEM tires with 215/60R-14's which increased the tire width from the OEM tire of 7.28" to 8.46"--is this safe to stay with that size change or are there disadvantages, or...?
