Pulling Turbo For Wastegate Porting?

Anyone want to give me directions or a guide on how to do this? I feel comfortable with the porting and all, as I do a lot of metal cutting and such, but i'm just starting to do car stuff, and I don't want to **** anything up.

There are instructions in the factory service manuals and Haynes manual.

The basic concept is:

1. Disconnect precat at rear of turbo
2. Remove heat shields, save for resinstallation
3. Disconnect oil and coolant lines at engine (much easier then taking them off of the turbo)
4. Remove compressor outlet pipe and TID
5. Remove vacuum hoses (if applicable)
6. Unbolt turbo from manifold and lift out

I tend to do this from above, but many prefer to do it from below. Do whatever is easier.

Pull it from the top, pulling it from the bottom is much harder.

Can you give me a link, because all I seem to be finding is one where the directions are like:

Step 1: Pull Turbo
Step 2: Port
Step 3: Put Back In

just did this about three weeks ago and differant people have differant oppinions on whether or not to pull from top or bottom and really it has everything to do with if you have takin out your air pump etc... With my setup it was easyiest to take everything off from the bottom and actually pull the thing out from the top, but thats just me. you will know what to do when you see it because there are only a couple ways it can come out and oh yeah I didn't take the mani off either so I had to really use my emagination on how to take out the peice to the puzzle. There are a couple of things you could **** up by doing this but if you are carefull then it should be ok. Watch out for the old engine harness because alot of those wires are brittle around the turbo do to the heat! I broke a wire off that goes from the o2 sensor to the acv however I will resplice and get it working again. Well I hope this helps and deffinatley for the first time it will take some time! Also have a buddy to help you out, it makes for a more pleasurable experiance

I red the factory service manual for pulling the turbo and it seems complicated by the way they describe it. Maybe i'll just try and round up a few guys in the area at the next NJ meet and see if anyone wants to help me out. If not i'll find a place in the area that will do it for me.

Here's a good write up. Pulling the turbo is pretty easy if you don't have the emissions stuff.

I just pulled mines nearly a month ago so I can port my wastegate. It took me about an hour but if I had to do it all over again, it would only take me 30-40 minutes to do it.

This is the one I am talking about. https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-archive-72/small-wg-big-wg-no-creep-write-up-125744/

I could have sworn you posted this before today.
My mistake.

I dunno, I might give it a shot if I feel comfortable by the time I decide I need to do it. My main concern is liquids like cooland and oil getting all over the place, and putting it all back together properly.

Another thing, at what point in my mods would it be a good idea to do the porting? These are what I plan to buy, so what order do you think I buy and install them in, and at what point should I do the porting?

FCD
Boost Gauge
Walbro 255
A'pexi Intake
Bonez 2.5 DP and High Flow Cat
MBC

With no ABS pump I agree its much easier to just go from the top. However, with the pump I had to take 2 off from the top and 2 off from the bottom if I remember correctly.

Hardly any oil leaked out. About a gallon of coolant for me drained. Just place a funnel or something with a tube going to a bucket. When you loosen the water pipe bolt, you'll see what I mean. You can just re tighten it if it begins to pour out.

The S5 wastegates are very good already, so you can do a few mods before porting is necessary.
1: Intake
2: Boost Gauge
3: FCD
4: Walbro
5: *WG Port*
6: DP/Cat
7: MBC

Just an intake won't cause you to hit fuel cut. So, you can later do a boost guage and FCD. Go ahead and install a new fuel pump since the stock one isn't rated for more than 250hp. Port that wastegate to help keep the boost where you want it. Now you can do the DP/Cat. Since this may cause you to hit fuel cut, it's a good thing you already did the FCD in step 3. Now that that's taken care of, turn the boost back up if you want with the install of a MBC.
