Anyone know of something I can put on parts and things in the engine bag area that will keep them from dying from weather, but doesn't attract dirt like a magnet... want stuff to be clean but protected from the elements at the same time.

I don't think there is anything that repel's dirty is there? lol It is very hard to keep the engine bay clean with a fan pulling air into the engine bay. What a thing eh? dirt in that air gets thrown all over our **** in the engine bay. Try a horizontal/V mount rad/IC I think that will direct the air in other directions than your engine stuff.

 

Well what brought this to my attention was the difference between the two cars I have...

One was a daiily driver for someone that knew nothing about cars, I think, and the other was the same for a cool RX-7 / Rotary nut.

The difference is, the rotary nut's car has LOTS rust on parts (not the body though haha)... the hood latch being about the worst of all. The other car has everything in very GOOD condition... BUT nasty dirty! Dirt mixed with lubricant or road grime or something has kept all the parts in great condition as far as the metal goes.

I think what happened is the rotary nut kept his engine bay really clean... which would also mean no grease all over stuff... and so various bare metals rusted.

So is WD-40 and a monthly or weekly pressure wash of the engine bay the only way to keep it in good condition AND clean?

I would advise against pouring petroleum products all over your engine bay. It might not happen every day but if some of that catches your exhaust LOOK OUT!!! There goes the whole car. An engine fire can TOTAL your FC easily. A friends FD was totaled due to a fire. I'd say paint/clear coat everything you can and deal with weekly cleanings.

 

How about painting the surfaces that could rust?

 

if you want to protect some metal from rusting .. clean it off well ,, and or shine it up and clear coat it with some high temp .. thats what ill be doing on alot of my parts

 

So - Who can recommend a high temp clear coat?

 

i dont know. how did his catch fire?? at a previous job, we directly sprayed and wiped WD40 all over the exhaust manifold on carb'd 13Bs. all it did was burn off (not fire) and left a nice smell in the air. this was common practice and it wasn't a small amount of WD40.

 

Looks like I'll be buying another can of hi-temp black paint haha... no need to clearcoat everything if I'm going through the trouble of painting parts.. unless I want them to be shiny... but the hi-temp cans that I've been using have a pretty clean looking finish.
