Proper way to install oil cooler bypass valve

Is the proper way to install the oil cooler bypass valve with the spring portion of the valve facing towards the ground or in towards the oil cooler? It dropped out quick and I wasn't paying attention.

TIA

Not exaclty what I was looking for. I know the spring, then thermostat, then washer, then nut. I wanted to know the orientation of the thermostat.

My bad. Ok. I dont have have the thermostat infront of me. But when that thing works the little round piece of metal moves out to plug the hole inside the oilthermostat hole.

If you want an answer fast. Toss it in water above 140°F. You will see the pin slide out. That goes infirst.

OK, I got it. As long as that's a socket at the bottom of the picture holding the nut, I know how to reassemble it now.

I believe it's a socket. The threaded part sticking out is the bolt that goes into the bottom of the oil cooler.

The socket is a tool, not a car part. It attaches to a socket driver, and is what physically grips the bolt so that you can apply torque and remove the bolt.

You could also use a wrench.
