Proper timing procedures?
What is the proper timing setting procedures? The factory service manuel says to first line up the YELLOW mark on the pulley with the pointer on the front housing. Then line up the small spherical hole on the cas gear with the cas housing. Then plugg the cas in while holding the cas spindle steady. Then hook up the timing light to the L1 spark plug wire. Now, when I do this procedure my timing is always off. However, if I replace the first step by lining up the RED mark with the pointer instead of the yellow, my timing is on "yellow mark in sinc with the timing gun. So which is the proper procedure? Whenever I do get the timing right, my turbo starts to glow as if the timing is not right.

Set the timing with the first mark (on the right side looking at the pulley). Are you sure you are stabbing the CAS correctly? Just in case you didnt know but line it up with the dimple on the bottom of the CAS shaft and then look at the top of the CAS with the cover off and make not of where one of the 2 teeth on the top CAS gear are in relation to the CAS body. When you stab the CAS the shaft will rotate so you need to adjust it so that when the CAS is fully stabbed you have the tooth in the same place as where it was in relation to the body. Let me know if you need me to explain it more clearly.

First mark to the right (looking from the front) is yellow, or leading. Sure you got the wires going to the right plugs? Leading timing adjusted to the red mark is what, about 15 degrees off?

The plugs were mixed up but not anymore. Does it matter how you plug the cas as long as you still end up with the yellow mark aligned during timing? Also, to be sure the timing gun should be connected to the L1 plug right?

maybe my timing gun is messed up. I just bought the thing and it is the clip on kind that clips right to the wire. Maybe it is getting signals from a nearbye wire and is throwing it off.

Move it down the wire, then. I've got the same kind of setup, and sometimes the strobe will flash 180* out (yellow at the bottom of the pulley!), which I "fix" by removing the pickup, then putting it back on. Weird stuff, man, lol...
What I had to do after the rebuild is just time it by ear, until the idle was nice & smooth and she ran good. Then after she broke in a bit I started tweaking her towards the leading mark (she was maybe 5-7* off from the "ear" timing", and to this day she still runs better about 2-3* advanced). Let's face it, if you can time her by ear, and she runs great throughout the performance range, then you time her with the light and she runs like ****, I'd go with the ear method, lol...

Ha, yeah your probably right. I've noticed my gun doing the same thing: Sometimes the marks are on top when it flashes and sometimes they are out of sight. I've had it set already where the engine sounded great, but the timing gun said otherwise. I guess I'll go with the ear method. Engine still idles high though. I might have to check my tps.
