Project "headlight Scoop" Version 1.4
Ok I know this isn't anything new and maybe not exciting, but I have been really researching other headlight covers with "cold air inlets" and it appears that the design of many of them is probably not very benificial. Most of them have very small openings and don't even appear to have the opening in a place where air could even reach your air box.. SO.... I decided to map out the air flow from the headlight cover to the "modified airbox" on my old FC. I drew on the bottom of the cover to show where the ONLY place the air could actually travel to a modified box. See picture #1 for the only availible area to put the scoop with it interfering with the under "skeleton". Then I did the obvious cut and bending of the metal, I haven't glassed the sides yet but will post more pics as I progress. I am currently squaring the edges and sanding the cover preparing to lay the fiberglass edges. This part will be what I Make the "final mold" out of to pull replicas from.. Tell me what you think..
The air opening measures 3/4 of an INCH!!!! Talk about some serious air grabbing ! I have heard the whole "not a high pressure area junk" so please don't clutter the thread up with a bunch of mumbo jumbo about that..I guarantee it will get more air into the air filter then no scoop at all....

Thats pretty nice, I appreciate people like you who actually make things for function over looks. I am about to order one, its the less appealing FEED design, but ti seems more functional. Im gonna modify my ram air setup to collect air from the grill and the headlight.

any 'fresh' air is better then nothing. the FC's light lids don't give alot of room for a good sized vent. i make vented headlight lids and sell them. the problem with making a fibreglass headlight lid is the 'tabs' that hold it to the car. not strong enough IMO.
i can't see why you don't make the vent wider, it can go a bit more wide on your project. don't forget to grind down the paint to bare metal if you want the resin to stick.

If you check the first picture the headlight connector sweeps up in the area that is marked all black, so I just made it narrower, It gives it knida a low key look... I dunno first design first attempt..

i think you are on the right track but that looks rough, people want looks to go with performance, suggestion i would have is widen it at the face to the driver's side of the headlamp cover and narrow it into the slot where the scoop is, mold it with fiberglass and smooth it. it would look nice and direct more airflow into the channel as well.

Yeah this was just a pic of the cover 2 seconds after I cut it.. I primered it so you get a better idea, it will be glassed and smoothed, and I could cae less if anyone likes them to buy.. I am not trying to sell them, if someone likes the finished product I may make some copies.. here is another pic, THIS IS JUST A ROUGH MOCK UP!

You can quite easily enlarge the opening on the piece of metal that is directly under the headlight cover, this allows you to use a bigger duct or scoop. I found with my headlights (Hellas) that I had very little room for a duct as the plug sticks out pretty far and I'd have to have a very narrow shallow duct. After thinking about this for a while I decided to make a scoop instead (bulged out, not in). It's got a much bigger opening than anything else I've seen (the opeining is about 1"x4", now that's more than 4X bigger than yours), and it sticks out into the airflow to grab more air. One thing is that the air doesn't necessasily have to have a direct path to the filter, it will move around obstructions. What you're trying to do is make a higher pressure area where the duct is than where the filter and airbox are, if you acheive this, the air will move to the airbox. That said it is better for the air to flow directly. You need to remember anytime you intall one of these is to remove the bit of weather stripping on the hood, or else your efforts will be mostly useless.

I think black91n/a is on the right track. If we just make an inlet that doesn't have something to channel the air in, or deflect the air down into the opening, then most of the air will flow right over it. I'd suggest getting (or making) a little raised scoop over the inlet that will stick up into the airflow and pull some of the air passing over the hole, in. Like the old Turbo 300zx's. Cool project.

wouldn't it make more sense cutting a slit in the HOOD rather than the headlight cover? you can fab a duct out of shapeable metal so that it shoots the air down right over the cone filter. of course this would only work if you have a cone filter and just that - with a CAI it'd be pointlessly shooting cool air onto the piping.
sure it'd look goofy with a slit in your hood behind the headlight, but it would work much better than a headlight scoop.

Ok... Where do I start.. I did it the way I did so that it would not have to cut up the "skeleton" underneath.. Yes cutting the hood.....UM...If I were going to go to all that trouble I wouldn't have.....I would have just fabbed a REAL CAI....
Anyways It never hurts to play around with spare parts you have laying around..

I've always been tempted to cut a hole in the area underneath the filter, and run some PVC ducting to me dinked-up brake duct on that side (someone hit a curb while parking 
).
I think it would deliver nice cold air to the filter without worrying too much about sucking in water, and would be a cheap $10 mod, hehe. That scopp looks pretty neat with the little junk of metal behind it though.

Has anyone here heard of ram air? I have one from weapon r and it seems to solve al the problems written about in this forum. Am I the only perosn who is onto this? i have only had 1 problem with it which was originally a way to run the ducting to the front grill cause, the radiator was in the way.

Why does everyone cut inwards? Why not actually make it GRAB air? Turn it into a real scoop and not just a duct. Make the thing actually stand above the headlight where it can catch some air instead of air flowing over it.
