Not always, I've heard people quote that rebuilds can take up to 100 miles before all the excess junk is burned off and the smoke goes away. Obviously it lessens during that whole time too.

And when I started mine it filled my entire neighborhood with smoke because of the vaseline, no biggie.

My parents hate my FC too. I'm not allowed to start it in the garage because it makes the whole house smell like gas if I do. And my neighbors suck also, you've seen the letter

The only people I care about in my neighborhood, though, don't care at all.

100 miles?!?!?! Thats a really, really long time for the engine to stay burning the lube. I personally, ever seen a rebuild smoke for that long unless there was something wrong or the turbo was gone. Mine started and had initial startup-smoke but nothing after the first 15 mins of idling. After that it started right up, but the idle wasnt perfect untill it smoothed itself out over the breakin period.

Not just lube, but excess hylomar and RTV that worked its way inside, and various other crap. I've heard it happening, my rebuild smoked lube for about 20 min, heavily for about 5 filling the entire neighborhood, but after that it was done. Just have heard of it happening.

EDIT
Here's one example from Kevin Landers site with his experience.

"Be prepared for smoke…there is assembly lube in the engine, which will be burned out in the form of smoke. Expect this to get into your exhaust and smoke can remain for up to 8 hours afterwards until it is all burned out slowly."

As the engine gets hotter more viscous oil amongst other things, will begin to burn. It should smoke for a while. As you can see from the vid the smoke was slowly dissapating.

Dustin....Good Job the motor looks great

Yea thats ok didnt know it was the first time the car started. Anyways, I was comparing to my rebuilds. I know smoke is normal, but I referring to 100miles part. Anyways, good luck with your car, and im glad to see a successful rebuild.. Now all you need is to pressurize that motor
