Problem with my fc :(

So here's the story. I just baught my first rx7 last friday for 1,00$. The engine ran well, the body was in exelent condition, but the car did not pass smog. I was pretty sure with a good tune-up and the advice listed on these forums would most likely get my car to pass smog. So today i changed the oil, replaced the spark plugs and got a new oil filter (had to deal with what i could afford atm). After i finished working on my car i decided to take it for a little test drive around the block. As i going down my street, while shifting from second to third, the engine was reving up while the clutch was in and my foot was off the cass pedal. When i put the car in third it started to take off on me. I imediately turned off the engine and pulled over. After checking some vacuum hoses under my hood (in the best visibility i could withought a flashlight at 12am) i could night find what the problem was. I started my car again and the engine began imediately to rev up to about 5,000 rpms before i shut it off again. It's a little late now and im gonna try and fix the problem tomorrow and just thaught that anyone might have an idea of whats wrong with my car. Im pretty sure it doesnt have to do with the new changes i did on my car, since none of them have to do with the revving of the engine. Any thaughts and suggestions would be greatly apreciated. Thanks.

EDIT: It's an '86, dont know if that will help but thaught i'd add it in anyways.

Or the cable got hung up somehow. Sounds like something is definitely holding the plates open to get those kinda revs.

If you're failing hydrocarbons, and cant find anything else wrong, look to the catalytic converter. With the age of these cars it's likely past it's useful life.

And hey, welcome to the forum.

I'd look into getting a new street legal exhaust. It will porbably help you with emission,s and performance.
