problem with mobil 1 filters

has neone had a problem trying to get there mobil 1 oil filter off. ive always used purolater one or K&N filters but i decided to change it to a mobile 1. well ive always just put my oil filters on hand tight then it would come right off with a little effort but i wouldnt need a wrench to get it off. well when i went to take the mobil 1 filter off it wouldnt buge i couldnt get an oil filter wrench in there so i tried using my belt to get it off and it still wouldnt buge. so what i ended up donig was taking a screw driver and hammering it threw the side of the filter and turning it using that. i actually had to do this twice so that i could get it to the point that i could take it off with my hand. any one else had this problem?

No, did you lube the O-ring with oil prior to installation?

I use Mobil 1's and they are hard to get off.. but every filer I have ever used .. IE fram Etc. have been a bit of a pain. I put mine on tight as I can by hand.. and when they are clean you can get a firm grip on them. I always have to use a screwdriver or a belt. It's just a simple way of life to me ..

The oil filter's seal absorbs oil and expands which forms a nice tight seal that prevents leaks for people who do not tighten the filter enough as required. Think of the Mobil1 as idiot proof for all those idiots out there.
And for the rest of us, try buying a good oil filter wrench. You'll never have to use the 'screwdriver hole trick' or brute force, and it allows you to follow the FSMs instructions concerning oil filter replacement.

I ended up getting a set of these.. life is much easier now;

Only used them once so far .. but they come in handy for alot of things .. worth the investment if you dont already have a pair.

A trick I used on an mx6 was getting a hose clamp and tightening it around the filter. And gettin a hammer and just hitting the screw on the clamp a little to break it free. Worked for me and didn't get oil everywhere.

My guess...

is that you had an adrenelin rush when you were twisting it on at last oil change and didn't realize you own strength at the time. Twist off effort shouldn't be any different between one filter to another.

Poking a hole in the filter to leverage it out with the screwdriver is a common play. Actually, you're supposed to poke a hole in the top anyway so the oil drains out of the filter completely before you remove it.

Easiest way is to buy a filter cap/socket that fits the filter. It simply fits on the top of the filter like a hat, insert the ratchet from the top, twist, it's loose.

If your girlfriend is Olive Oil, then just have spinach handy next time.

mobil 1 filters areny spacifically for synthetic oils its just that they filter down to a smaller molicule than most others and they are built really well

Around here, you can buy 2 Mazda filters for the cost of one Mobil1. But with all the bankrupt stores around here, I stocked up on them pretty cheap.

Never punch a hole in the oil filter unless it is absolutely necessary. All the crud in the filter can possibly backwash. Keep the oil & filtered media in the filter and have a few rags ready for the spill during removal. Cheap filters won't spill much because anti drain back valve doesn't work well. Avoid cheap filters.

Mobil1 filters are a high quality filter that can be used with any oil or filterable fluid.

Also, punching a hole in the filter creates the possibility of metal shards dropping into the oil lines, which would be a bad thing. Usually if you just break it loose first (leaving it in place, just loose), then drain the oil and come back for the filter afterwards, you eliminate a lot of the spill potential.
