I'm sure are good threads around but I know what searching for stuff like this is like. There are tons of threads that mention it, but almost none with useful info.
Anyway, premix is 2-cycle oil that is added to the gas tank to better lubricate the internals of the combustion chamber. There are two ways to premix- either remove the OMP and run premix, or keep the omp and use less premix. If you remove the omp, you want to run around 100:1 - 125:1(approx 1 oz. premix per gallon of gas) and with the omp you want to run 250:1 - 300:1 (less than 1 oz. per 2 gallons of gas.)
I personally opted to keep the omp because I have an over-active imagination and would have nightmares of someone else accadentally putting in gas with no premix and the engine dieing.

Well, not using it, the engine should be ok, but using it will help lubricate the internals and keep it running longer.
Edit: here's a good thread on pre-mixing: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ghlight=premix

Here's my thread from April asking about the OMP lines.
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ight=omp+lines
As for which premix to use, I've tried a the top and bottom of the line, and didn't notice a difference. Right now I'm using some Walmart Super Tech (or whatever it is) oil which is blue and smells like ***, and some MOTOREX SPEED MOTORCYCLE PREMIX 2-STROKE OIL my buddy gave me. I didn't notice any difference. I was going to switch to Reted's recommendation after I run through the gallon of Walmart crap I bought.
Also I went out and bought a 6-pack of 12oz powerade bottles. Drank the powerade, cleaned out the bottles, and filled them with 2-stroke oil. With my driving habits, 200 miles comes out to about 10-14 gallons of gas, more or less for highway miles. Which averages out to about a 128:1 premix ratio, give or take a little.
Go to the gas station, pour in your 12oz bottle of oil using a funnel, fill up with 87 octane, clean out the funnel with paper towels while it's filling, finish fueling, write milage on recepit, reset trip meter. I have half a coke box and it holds 3 bottles, the funnel, and a bunch of paper towels comfortably. I keep it in one of the storage bins.

This would help a lot - get a funnel to insert into your gas tank filler - Wal*Mart carries a nice one for like $1.50.
Pour the appropriate amount of premix before you fill your gas - 16 oz. or half a quart is good for most FC's.
Top the tank off with gasoline.
It would help to drain the gas tank to under 1 / 4 tank everytime you do this to get a consistent ratio.

i have no omp, i took mine off after a fire burnt up the lines, made a block off plate, and i bought 12 - 12oz bottles of premix oil from mazda trix, it says only to use 1/2oz per gallon, iv started doing this a few months ago and i finally used up 1 quart of oil.. not to bad should last me a year or so at this rate. it is fun to watch peoples reactions when i fill up at a gas station though haha

When i put premix in my tank, after im done pouring the oil in, i carefully run some gasoline thorugh the funnel (i.e. not full blast) to clean the funnel out. Makes for a lot less messiness since gasoline evaporates.

there has been an ongoing debate as to whether it helps or not.
after seeing, hands-on, the effects of premixing i recommend it for all high HP applications and even for those who can handle adding a little into their tank on their daily drivers.
some people will tell you it does absolutely nothing and others will tell you their cars run worse on it, well yes they will if you add too much oil to your tank... too much oil is not a good thing but no one listens..

with anything there is pros and cons.
in gereal the
pros:
tired engines may result in better fuel mileage and a negligable increase in power
new engines will see less carbon deposits depending on the 2 stroke oil used
engines will see less overall wear during their lifespan(my opinion after seeing a 4k and 24k mile premixed engine torn down from my own car)
cons:
plugs may oil foul now and then
too much oil will cause a reduction in power and may damage the catalytic converter as well it can cause detonation as it reduces the octane of fuel when mixed too rich
it is a pita to carry around and measure oil and add it to the tank prior to fillups
