Power steering rack leak

Hello all,

My suspension renovation was coming along just fine until today when I found out there was fluid inside the tie rod dust boot. I looked around and the boot seems fine; the car hasn't been known to leak other fluids either.

What is the culprit? I never had any steering issues when the car was on the road; is the rack compromised?

This is a 91 T2 btw.

Thanks.

Sounds like the seals in the rack are bad. It will be easier to just find another rack than to tear it apart to change the seals (which you will have to source). Worst case is you lose all the fluid which could burn up the pump.

That's what I thought- but where and which seals are the ones that failed? I don't see any of them inside the joint/boot area, hence my confusion.

Thanks.
