Power Steering Pump Problem?

Hello,

I was just wondering if the 91 Turbo II power steering pump fails a lot on these cars? I was drifting at the track yesterday and all of a sudden my powersteering doesn't work anymore..it was a battle for me to try and turn the car. I understand it's an old car, but I've just heard from a friend that these things fail often on the FC. Is this true?

Eric

Not sure if they fail often, but running without a p/s pump to me is much nicer. I was having a tough time getting used to me T2 w/o p/s, but realised it was mostly under inflated tires. Once I aired them up, my steering effort is no more than 20% more than with p/s. To me no p/s gives you more feel of the road and lets you feel what your doing more. Sometimes its a bit harder to control, but otherwise its not bad at all. Save that money for a replacement pump and buy some other mods!

power steering pumps rarely fail unless you ran the car low on power steering fluid

Maybe try an aftermarket p/s cooler and make sure there is no kink in the lines to obstrut the pressure. A kink in the line would make the pump work harder then it needs too causing extra stress. Or maybe the old fluid got contaminated with metal from the last failed pump. Just some thoughts...
