Power steering goes stiff

Occassionally, the steering on my '88 SE will get a lot stiffer than usual, and then it returns to normal. Doesn't happen often, and doesn't last long when it does. Fluid is up to the mark, and the belt is new and tightened properly. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

That pump is speed sensitive. The ECU may (sometimes) be telling the pump you'r going faster than you actually are.

the 86-88 has a variable assist system. it is computer controlled, and they seem to get inconsistant. it is either the computer box under the left of the dash or the pump, or the connection between them. if you disconnect the computer it will default to 50% stiff
