Power Seatbelt Broken - Deal says car is "Branded"
I have a 90 Turbo II. It's in excellent condition and has about 10,000 on a rebuit motor. I am the second owner. Yesterday, the power seatbelt on the passenger side stopped working (the cable is hanging out of the track). The seatbelt on the driver's side is also moving slow, so I figured I'd better do something about it.
Knowing that there was a recall on this part, I take it to the dealer to see about getting it fixed. He looks up my serial number and tells me the car has been "branded" and he is not allowed to work on it. Period. He will not touch the car, but can not tell me why not. He just kept saying the car was "branded" and I am on my own. He even said that the recall was still open on my car. He just won't fix it.
Does anyone have any idea what this means and if there is anything I can do about it? Obviously, driving without seat belts is not an option. Help!

The auto seatbelt was one of the dumber ideas to come from the NTSB & the car industry.
IMHR It's not worth fixing, but the belt is absolutely worth using.
I manually locked the carrier in the back position, left the belt connected & just slid under it when getting in.
To suppress the alarm, unplug the control box behind the passenger dash.
Its final act was saving me from a face plant into the windshield when that damn truck pulled out in front of me.

That's BS. I have a feeling the dealer just doesn't want to do the job - they probably don't get much out of doing a warranty job like that.
I would call Mazda USA and get a straight answer. That is a MAJOR safety concern, and I would want a very good reason why they can't do it.
Might also be worth calling another Mazda dealer with your VIN and ask them about it, see if you get the same answer.

Look at the top of your ownership and what does it say? Does it say salvage or rebuilt? If not then your car isn't branded and the dealer is shooting you a line. But to be honest, Im not sure how the branding system works in Kansas so its *possible* but regardless, they should still fix it.
Raise heck at the dealer, if he still doesn't fix it, call corporate and report the dealer. Get their dealer number and name of manager/owner and the person you spoke with when you're there so they know your not screwing around.
I don't know why this keeps coming up as a topic. They have to fix these belts or pull the cars from the road. There's no grey area. Take a stand and report the dealer, don't ***** foot around.

I still say it is not worth the hassle. You're whipping a dead horse.
It's not worth getting on the SM's jerk list for a non fixable design problem.
The work-around is simply to use it manually.

The only reason that they dealer wouldn't normally fix the car, is if the car is a salvage/wrecked car that has not been cleared of the salvage title.
Call Mazda NA if the local dealer refuses and the car has not been wrecked.

You guys ROCK! I'm going to call Mazda today. I'm happy to know that I can lock it in place, but at this point I'm going to pursue making Mazda do the right thing.
I'll keep you posted.

Update
The Mazda rep said that the dealer was wrong and opened a ticket. He also notified the regional rep that the service manager refused to perform a warranty service.
I'll let you all know the final outcome. Thanks again for the brilliant help!

I wouldn't leave anything valuable in your car though. And if you can, watch them do it.

no leave them on, take pictures, and mention it to the sales writer.. that way if they do break them then it is up to them to replace them...
never make things easier for the stealership it is their job... and I can say this because for years I was a mechanic for a stealership!

Ok, this morning I had the same problem on my 90 GTU, the passenger seatbelt stopped moving and some weird black greassy cable is hanging. Tell me if the recall goes for this model too cause my unkle works at world car mazda in San Antonio so I could take it.
