Post-Searching Confusion on Manual Tranny Fluid.

So the recommended weight for transmission fluid, (defined by haynes) is 80w-90. Yet throughout all the other threads, I only saw people talking about 75w-90. Also alot about premium/racing brands like Neo, Royal Purple, Redline. I haven't gotten into my tranny fluid yet, but it sounds like ***. I went and bought 'Valvoline "DuraBlend" Synthetic Blend SAE 80w-90 Gear Oil' because it was like $4.90 a quart. I didn't want to go cheap cause you don't change tranny fluid that often, do you?

They also had Mobil 1 75w-90, from what I gathered on the other threads, this eats away at the brass synchro's that we have. (specifically i have an '86 N/A). Does the Valvoline that I bought have the same high sulfur content that's gonna ruin my synchro's? My 1-2 synchro is bad allready. I'm not too concerned with a Gear Oil that will somehow "fix" my synchro's. Just a gear oil that will work, and not make things worse.

How much do Redline, Neo, Royal Purple, etc cost per quart?

I don't race, but I give my car a very heathly workout.

Looking for suggestions, and/or advice.

I've used Redline MT-90 for about 15 years. With the factory gear oil, I could barely make the 2 - 3 shift (with cold drivetrain) in the winter. The MT-90 completely eliminated that problem, and improved all-around shifting as well.

You would need to buy 3 quarts of Redline MT-90 at $8 to $10 each. The lowest price I've seen is on ebay--about $8 per quart.

it looks as though you can use either gl-4 or gl-5 75w-90 gear oil. synthetic or not doesnt matter. gl-5 is backward compatible with gl-4. i am running mobil 80w140 synthetic, its a little stiff when cold, but fine once warmed up.

Actually any gear oil except for Redline, Neo, and Royal Purple that the tranny temp can exceed 220F-240F can cause the sulfer oxide break down.

So is the jury still out on 'Valvoline DuraBlend Synthetic Blend 80w-90'?
Or is there a verdict?

About 2 years ago i change my tranny and rear diff. fluids to valvaline synthetics, they were free since i worked there, and they have worked great for me. the tranny and diff felt alot better after changing them. GO for it valvoline is fine.

It has the same problems as any other gear oil (except the ones I listed above), with the break down at higher tranny temps.

So use at your own risk, and do regular oil changes and don't overload the tranny if you are going to use Valvoline.

Redline is wonderful. It really does improve shifting. It is a little pricy, but its worth it.
