Possible to wire S4 cruise switch to work on S5?
I have a 91 NA with factory cruise control. When I bought the car, the cruise control switch was removed (used by previous owner on another car). I have an S4 switch -- can I change the wiring to make it work in an S5 or is not worth the trouble?
My attempts at locating an NA S5 CC switch have been fruitless so far. Thanks

With or without a airbag??? The diagams seem to show quite a diff whether you have airbag or not. Seems the airbag cars have two switches.
The switch you have, does it have 10 sockets in the plug????? If that is the case, and your car is NOT one with an airbag....then it could be used BUT, you'd have to swap a few wires around in the plug.
And you have the rest of the cruise control?? the actuator in the engine bay and the control unit??
Oh, hell, I forgot. The sw you have is a series four so it does have 10 sockets. So the real question is.....the plug in the car that it attaches to...does it have 10 pins/sockets also????? OH, don't connect it up without rearranging the wires in the plug.

no, the S4 switch is a latching switch, while the s5 switch is an momentary.
they can not be interchanged, furthermore the mounts are radically different between the S4 and S5

Oh, ok. For the sake of argument let's say it can't be done and he needs to buy a series five.
So just what part is latching? The Set, Resume, Coast are all momentary on a series four, at least on my cars they are. Are you talking about the *Main* button? That can be overcome with some Krazyglue.
By the way, I saw on Ebay where someone paid over 100 bucks for a wiper switch. MY, my and with old relays still in place.

The main button is momentary on the S5 models, but latches on the S4 models.
See the problem is more how the switch works. On the S5 the cruise control computer is expecting a momentary on signal, to turn on the cruise computer. If it gets the latched signal it does not work correctly.
Then toss in the problem with mounting... It mounts up to the screw holes, but sits too far back.
see, it just does not fit well... S4 cruise switch in a S5 cluster surround.
And yep, On ebay I paid $80 for a convertible wiper switch last week, because I had a customer that needed one. Its a bummer that I then have to charge my customer so much because I had to pay so much for the core.

Thank you for the information. My car does not have an airbag. I just happened to find an S4 switch at a wrecking yard (I wasn't charged for it because of other items I purchased). I've seen switches on Ebay, but what's to keep the seller from sending me another S4 switch? I prefer the "hands-on" approach of a salvage yard.
I'm still looking for a switch. Any ideas?

So the one in your hand won't fit in the cluster, eh?

Hailers:
The switch I have will "fit" in my cluster, but it doesn't function. I plugged it in at the salvage yard, and at first, it lit up as if the dash lights were on (it was daylight). In your experience, have I shorted the CC computer? I won't know until I get a S5 switch. Sorry for the delayed response.

Don't know for sure what got messed up. I did look at the pinouts for the two series and they were not wired the same but I think the pins could have been rearranged to make it work ( pins/sockets in the swithes plug not the cruise computer). If I get bored I'll think about which pins/wires to swap in the plug.

The series four switch WILL work in your series five car. You have to depin the series five plug and repin it as the series four plug. There is one exception. You will have one wire that you will need to leave out and wrap in tape or dead end in some manner. That would be the LY (Blue/Yellow) wire. It's irrelevant.
So do this. If you don't have a jewelers set of small screwdrivers...go buy a set. Cost about three to five bucks. Then go to your plug and determine if you can remove a wire from the plug without messing it up.
There is a TAB that holds each wire in place. You have to look into the front of the plug, insert the smallest screwdriver and lift the TAB up and pull on the wire at the same time. The wire should exit the plug. You might try several times. I can't explaing it any better than that.
If you determine that you know how to remove the wires, then write back and I'll send you a jpg of how and where each wire goes in the plug for the series four cruise control switch to work.
Oh. About the lights going out. It's hard to tell if the unit is whacked or not. The way I look at it, if you had hit the MAIN SWITCH button, then you would have put 12v to ground and that should have popped your METER fuse. Several other items in the car should have ceased to work if that had happened. If you have a meter, check the B/Y wire for 12volts. That is the pwr wire that is fed from the Meter Fuse.
