Possible effects of ill-placed plug wires?

I've had my 91' NA for about 10 months now, and since then I've regularly changed plugs, done the unflooding procedure, etc. Now I'm going to replace the plug wires and I notice that the previous owner did not just place the trailing plugs in the wrong spot or somehting like that.....The leading pack was powering the front rotor and the trailing pack was powering the rear rotor. I quickly fixed this and noticed a lot smoother idle, better acceleration, smoother shifting at the top of the rpm band(auto) and thats about it. They have been on for the 10k miles I've owned the car, and only god knows how long with the previous owner. I should have changed them with everything else the day I brought the car home. Now I'm left to wonder... Could it have done anything besides just decreasing performance?
