To Port or not to Port....

Ok, here's is my dilema!

I had my 86 N.A Rebuilt around 4 or 5 thousand miles ago. I DID NOT get any portwork done to the engine

And i regret not getting any porting work done.

My question is. With enough time and 'skill' Could i dissasemble my engine and port it? I know there's a rule of thumb that says 'once it's together you can't port it'

Well, how true does that hold if my engine only has around 4k on it. I want to do a variation of the street port. I could get the templates. And i understand the car could be out of service for a couple weeks.

PLease help guys I want to take her apart and get more Grunt out of her. BUt i am afriad that when i put her all back together she's gunna run like crap do to dissasembling her. THanks for the help. Markus

6-port porting ain't worth tearing the motor apart for unless you have too tear it apart anyway!!

And, if you want to do it yourself.. Get the video on the 13b rebuild.... there's one on ebay right now... with that, anybody that has some wrenching skill can rebuild one!!!!

Replace the plastic/rubber seals and I think(anyways) that you should be fine. Those have kind of already been squished into place. While the metal ones have too, its not so bad.

Porting isnt worth it unless you have too much money, or the engien needs to be torn down anyways.

And will people stop posting that link to mazddatrix about 6 port porting? They are flat out wrong in some parts. N/a's mean nothing to them but profit. Same goes for Racing Beat. They make the worst products they can get away with selling for n/a's, and theres not enough competition for anybody to be any wiser.

Jim Langer of RB even went so far as to tell me n/a's arent worth modifying.

If you're really after a ported motor I'd recommend building your own!! Get yourself a 4 port TII block w/ high compression rotors and rebuild your own motor as well as porting. It may take a while but shouldn't cost too much $$ and will probably be fun to do. Then swap motors and sell your current rebuild.

*btw, that note from racing beat is great considering the original RX-7s were all NA's and the most desriable is a 6-port* I think a number of NA owners on the forums prove that NA's are well worth their RX-7 badging as well as all the time/money invested in mods.

Why would you want a 4 port motor for n/a? The only time it makes sense is when youre going BP. The 6 port housings have more overall casting than the TII block, and has the 6 port setup, so you have a good low end in addition to the killer top end. a SP 6 port block will make more power n/a than a Sp 4 port block.

Jim Langer also told me the 6 port motors were really mild motors. Kinda funny, since is has more port area and timing than ANY 4 port block. And I dont think 200+ rwhp without a turbo could be considered mild.

What!

Have you ever ported a six port NA before? There is trememdous potential. But you need to be creative.
