Popped my 80A Fuse?!?!
Popped my 80A Fuse?!?!
First off, I'm new to this forum and the rotary world
The battery in my 86 GXL was dead so i put in a fully charged one from my civic. I hooked up the negative terminal, then as soon as i touched the positive wire to the positive terminal it popped my 80A fuse
...Should i get another 80A fuse and try it again? Or is it shorting or not properly grounded? Everything is stock except the previous owner added a fuel cutoff switch and cone filter. I recently traded my mk2 jetta for this so I know nothing about it yet. Any help is greatly appreciated!
-On a side note, the coolant(/water?) seals are screwed and I have pressure in my coolant system(blows coolant out the reservoir)...I didnt know about that problem when I got the car so on my trip home the car overheated and shutoff(It was a very long night/morning, dont ask) so I got it towed home. Is my engine toast? or can it be torn down and rebuilt? Sorry I'm talking your ears off! Thanks again

Removing the battery cables the negative is removed first. When putting the cables on the positive goes first. Make sure you didn't get the terminals/cables mixed up as putting the positive cable to negative battery terminal and vis versa will blow the Main fuse. Also, a damaged wire could blow the fuse. Positive battery terminal is connected to both the starter and the Main fuse. The negative battery terminal is connected to both the starter and the fender.
I did this last week trying to jump my dead battery.... Be cautious and aware when you jump your battery... it is SO easy to not be paying attention / talking and put the cables on wrong...
Ah **** i think your right! I'll check it tomorrow...So is pineapple racing the best place to send my engine for porting and rebuild? Or will a rebuild DVD and a porting template suffice?

I will have to look into that when i take it apart, thanks! How much power can be expected from a large streetport? I would like to shoot for between 200 and 250hp....I have the feeling thats only obtainable with a bridgeport on the N/A
There is a whole other section for N/A performance, look around, there are lots of goodies on this site, 180-190hp is possible with the right bolt on's and tune, with the stock 6port motor.
the starter wire doesn't go anywhere near the 80amp main fuse btw, just correcting that as to not confuse the OP. the 80amp main fuse ONLY feeds to the alternator charge post, so the alternator could be faulty or that wire is grounded out somewhere on the chassis, or as said it can also blow if the battery is installed backwards.

The Negative wire is the one with the Yellow strip on it.
You hooked you wires up backwards, and that is why your fuse blew.
The main fuse: you can't just PULL it out.It is Bolted to each side of the fuse block with 2-10mm bolts.Undo those and the fuse can be pulled out.It is a Safety feature so your Fuses don't shake loose and shut down your engine while driving.
