Please identify this peice for me

As title suggests I need help to indentify this peice under my car "on the transmission I think?" if someone could please tell me what it does and if it effects very much, Seeing as the wires on it are frayed and not conected to anything, Also can someone please tell me how it should be wired? as the peice has been re-wired before.

use the macro function on your camera for close up shots....is that next to the starter? Probably just a ground. I've never seen it on any S4.

as for being "grounded? Im not sure what you are asking as one wire is broken right off and the other is about to break aswell, neither of wich are attached to anything..

no wonder, i have never seen an auto tranny and i never have seen a solenoid on a manual gearbox in the spot on any FC tranny.

after checking the FSM, that is your lockup control solenoid, it is the solenoid that controls fluid flow to the converter for torque converter lockup for better fuel economy.

thank you for the tip. just took a much clearer picture!

as a side note there is actaully another one of these under the car aswell but its in a slightly diff location like up higer than the one near the starter, would it be for the same thing or does it control somthing else?

there is a clutch disc in your torque converter, this solenoid controls fluid flow to lock up that disc. when the converter clutch is locked it acts as a solid unit so the coverter is directly driving the input shaft of the transmission so there is no free wheeling in the converter anymore.

normally when the converter is driving the transmission there is a bit of slip since it is hydraulic driven. best way i can describe it is an airplane propeller slicing through the air, some of the force is lost since not all of the air is driven directly back so the lockup clutch is there to lock the converter completely when needed basically like a manual transmission you have full positive engagement in the transmission. i'm sure you notice when driving an auto that when you increase throttle the RPMs will also climb unnaturally giving an almost slip feel, that is the torque multiplication of the torque converter in a fluid slip which is natural but when the torque converter clutch is locked up that slip is gone and RPMs will only increase with vehicle speed like in a manual transmission car.

i hope i didn't confuse you even more, heh.

althou that is still alot to take in I kinda follow what you are saying..

I guess then this would be an important thing to fix before trying to drive this car then?. would anybody be able to tell me how to remove it? as thats looks like the only way I will be able to fix its wires, also what is the factory wire colors for it and its conector so i can hook it up right when putting back on the car.

Thanks

this response wont help you...

but that is indeed something new for my notes. If i didnt read the thread and just looked at the image... it looks like something that is just suppose to be there. To think that object has that responsiblity for auto-tranny's... phew... good luck by the way.

Oh one more thing... i also understand where you come from when you want things to be broken down. But dont let it get to you. There are people in here that actually explain, with no hesitation to their full extent. Its like.... a family... ya? haha, later.
