I had the same thing.

It was the turbo heat shields making noise it kind of sounds like pinging. And it only happened during decelaration and sometimes idle.

Check them.

pinging usually comes from inlet temps too hot, and the fuel mixture is preigniting. and this happens more so when running alot of boost, and poor tuning (not enuf fuel), though when u back off, boost would be off, and i wouldn't think it would be pinging.

Have you tried using 93 octane? I had the same and it was just crappy gas...

It's very unlikely that its detonation under deceleration. You probably have something loose and rattling.

Thats why I said the heat shields it's probably not pinging because it happens during decel. Almost gaurantee it's the heat shields on the turbo.

When the car is under decel the fuel is cut. There is no fuel going to the engine.

I agree. Maybe you should take the heat shields off and make a quick run with the car to see if there is still a rattle.

Why spend the money for a rebuild if it's something loose. There is no fuel on deceleration, so if you aren't certain what it might be, take it somewhere for a diagnostic check.
