Pinging, metal on metal sound
I've got a metal on metal sound coming from the drivers (right side) basically from under the kick panel. It sounds like it's under the car but i'm not sure, maybe near the wheel.
Is there anything i should be looking for or any checks i can do about this?

sounds like detonation to me..... are you turbo???
yes it's turbo, fark i don't want detonation, it comes more often on bumps, but it also does it just driving smoothly sometimes, that led me to believe it was something loose, but i guess not. It does it when the revs are held driving normally not under load either, at about 2.5K rpm.
It's had no trouble being boosted hard.
It may have been stupid to do so but i've driven it about 400 miles since it's been like this, and it has had no problems, temps been fine etc.
how am i going to check my timing?

i didn't think it was since it didn't occur higher up in the revs, and it just came randomly which led me to believe something is loose
got a haynes manual so i'll have a look in there for it.
even so i think it's time i get a new front mount, ecu, and tune
It doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine bay, like i said, under the drivers kick panel is where it's coming from, and it sounds like someone has a spanner and is hitting a solid thick bit of metal, it's really shitting me, i just did some quick calcs and to get the car where i want is gonna be $4k if it is detonating

not really like a chain dragging, i can only describe it as a peice of metal in the underbody is loose and is banging against the drivers kick panel. (i have rock hard suspension, the hardest i've ever driven on, so everywhere is bumpy) which makes it feel like something is loose and banging against it, it's kinda like this is what it sounds like:
(the picture - dodgy ms paint)
it's like that top bit of metal is vibrating back and forth, it gets softer as you keep going (this is over like 15 or so seconds) then stops. This is the only way i can describe the sound. It doesn't sound like i'm shaking a spray paint can, that's more of a dull sound, this is a high pitched metal on metal sound.
I've usually noticed it highway cruising at around 2.5K rpm in 5th, but also in other gears, and like i said, i don't notice it on boost, it could be the exhaust is too loud to hear it, but i doubt it.
How did you fix your problem?

Well just to verify things, the haynes manual says:
Use a vehicle powered timing light
1. Warm the engine to oprating temp
2. Make sure all accessories are turned off
3. Hook up a tachometer in accordance with the manufacturers specs
4. Check and if necessary adjust idle speed.
5. Hook up a timing light to the leading (L-1) high tension lead
6. With the engine idling, verify that the leading, yellow, mark on the pully is alligned with the pointer.
7. If they aren't aligned, loosen the crank angle sensor locknut and rotate the sensor until the marks are aligned
8. Detach the timing light from the L-1 high tension lead and hook it up to the trailing (t-1) high tension lead
9. Repeat to check trailing side, but note the pointer should be aligned with the red mark
advance
10. hook up a timing light to the L-1 high tension lead
11. Increase the engine speed and verify that the ignition timing advances
Just for future reference if anyone reads this.
Ecept i don't understand why it says hook up a tacho???
If the timings ok, then what else could it be.
I don't think it could be high intake temps, i am still running the stock cooler, but it doesn't do it on boost, which is the weird thing, I'm using 96RON, but i'll stick an additive in there next time to boost the octane and see if that does anything.
I'll also check my spark plugs, but it may just be running lean.
Would the EGR system have anything to do with it?
