fill the hole with grease and then find something metal (maybe a socket or something else hopefully without much of a hole in it) that barely fitts into the center of the pilot bearing, then put it on the end and hit it with a hammer.
the pressure of the grease might push it out. i have had this work on a few cars, but for some reason the 2 fc's i tried it on it didnt work, the ywere really stuck in there.
If there is an parts store that rents tools in your area i would go that route.

I've not had good luck with the grease trick or the bread trick on FCs.. I believe the pilot bearing size and placement doesn't allow it to work too well.
I'd strongly recommend going to AutoZone and renting the puller, it makes life SUPER easy.
Get the kind that's a slide hammer type, not the kind that just tries to screw onto your flywheel or whatever. The slide hammer one works really well.
Make sure the fingers on the puller themselves are very strong, and engaged against the bearing very well.
This is what you want:

I used a puller.I got it from a Loan a Tool place. It worked once, but it was a Pain in the ***.The next time,I thought,Hmm,no problem.get the Puller Be done.NOPE.It wouldn't come out.I used a Dremel tool.I used a Stone to cut into the Inner Part,so that I could Pop the needle bearings out with a Pick. Then I carefully made a Groove on Each side of it.That allowed me to Grab it with a Pair of needle nose pliers and Fold it in on itself, and Since it became smaller,POP!.It came out.IF you are Careful,You could try this way,But I am not Recommending it,and you do it at your own risk!.Cheers.STYX.

Just had this experience this morning...the trans is out getting rebuilt. The flywheel nut came off easier than I expected (used my 20.4v impact gun and it came loose after about 30secs of rattling), but the pilot bearing was a bitch. I finally got it out using a rented tool from Schucks, but it was more luck than anything. I had already taken out the bearing cage by just popping it out with a small flat-blade screwdriver. I think the Mazda tool would be a cinch, but I can't justify the cost for such an infrequent job.
