why is it that when an engine goes bad.. 90% of the time is the rear rotor blew an apex seal? when i bought my spare engine it was the same thing.

the rear rotor runs hottest and has fuel cut(in stock config.), those 2 factors do not help it's lifespan.

it came with a jdm s5 engine
about 35-40k

i guess 20psi and stock fuel system with just a fcd didnt work too well for him?

gotcha. i can understand the fcd's but i was talking about 13b's in general. turbo and n/a. i forgot to mention my spare engine is a n/a. i lost both the rotor and housing but it did look as bad as RETed's link.

ive lost the front rotor on my turbo II 2x allready lol....

hey reserection u sure seals from the other rotor could bounce into the other one???? sounds more like they sucked something up from the intake, and that damaged the rear and the front.....

my first motor i blew, blew all the front apex seals out, but had a nick on the rotor on the good one.....

From that point on, whatever is left of the rotor is just freewheeling, and most any remnants of seal still in the slot are forcibly locked in place because the rotor was distorted. The damage you see when you take apart a blown apex motor is the damage that happened in a split second. Doesnt matter if you shut it down right then, tow it home, and open it up, or drive it another year, the damage was already done.

Oh, and I have seen much worse than that.

I just took apart an auto FD with a 37k mile reman. All stock. The people test drove it up north and bought it, trailered it back home, unloaded it, and it blew the seals before they could get to the gas station to fill the tank up. It destroyed the rear rotor and rotorhousing. What's worse, through an improbable stroke of bad luck that I have personally observed a handful of times out of hundreds of teardowns, one of the pieces of dead seal exiting the rear rotor exhaust port (quite quickly) hit the inside of the turbo manifold in just the right way to find its way INTO the front rotor exhaust port and do damage inside that housing too. I know this because all the seals on that rotor were in perfect condition with not so much as a chip or dent. There were a few small scratches on that rotor, which was reuseable, but that housing was scratched in several places and is not reuseable.

That is why I will never buy an ENGINE from you, cause if its not one thing its the other. All A SCAM.

I'm sure, I've seen it a few times before. This is a stock FD twinturbo, stock intake and all, so there is NO way something can get up into the stock air filter box, through the filter, past one of the compressor wheels, through the intercooler and all the up and down piping, throttlebody, and into the intake manifolds. ITs just not going to happen.

wow...this thread is alive again...LOL

good stuff....

And yes to whoever brought this back from the dead, It was instantaneous...
I lost a good amount of power while cruising on the fwy. It felt like the engine was totally off balance and it was a pain in the *** to get it going fast enough to cruise on the freeway. it was weird though...it started every time with a fragged rear rotor/housing and I drove it around the block a few times too. weird...
