Picked my baby up last night, initial impressions

Well, after a week of waiting, I picked her up last night. I'm buying a camera today, so i'll have baby pictures and cigars for you guys soon

Initial impressions:

#1 - MEGA blind spots. Switching lanes in this car is like playing truth or dare with a bunch of fat chicks, sooner or later, you're gonna get flattened. Oh, and how pretty, they even molded two nice little designs into the blind spot. This makes the blind spot fancy.

#2 - GOOD low end. It was raining pretty good last night, so I got to test out the torque a little bit. When the ground is damp, you can hang the *** out with ease. Even grabbing second gear quickly gives you a good scoot sideways. From about 20mph - 50mph, it moves like a sorority girl.

#3 - FANTASTIC gearing. It pulls pretty good off the line, but for people who like to drive insanely fast on the highway (me), 5th is a great overdrive. I was doing 100mph most of the way home with the tach lazily pointing straight up. Try THAT in a Honduh.

That's all for now, gotta shower and get to the DMV. Peace!

Cool Congrats!!!!

Wow those are pretty much the same impressions i got fomr mine when I got it last week.

Question, Does your's pull harder from like 2500 to 5000 than it does fromup top say 4000 to redline??? I always thought rotarys were supposed to have this mad top end pull and really Mine pulls better through the midrange than anywhere else!!

Definitely! I found that moderate short-shifting didn't make much difference in acceleration. Wierd.

Try getting a set of blind spot mirrors. They make small ones that only cost a few dollars. They help out alot.

Once again exact same thing here. Really strange. Huh.

As for the rear end sepping out! WOW what fun, Can you do it on dry pavement?? I can take a a left turn from a light ans pop the clutch into second and the rear end will step right out no prob, and leave some smoke for all the spectators Although I think the GXL's had an LSD so I'm sure that helped some as well

Yo,

Congrats! What year/model FC did you get? About the blindspots, you'll get used to them, but when I first got my car, I did the "Start to change lane OH SH*T, and give the "I'm a dumbass wave." to the car I almost changed lanes into. *grin*

Have fun with it!

you'll adjust to the blindspots and my car pulls the same way yours does in the RPM range. Its gotta be the turbos taht pull like mad in high RPM range.

2nd gear

I've only had my 7 for a few months, and it just keeps on getting to be more and more fun to drive.

Just the other day I was comming home from work after it had rained that day, and I was wondering if there was enough torque in second to break the wheels free. I was doing a lil over 20 in 2nd, put the clutch in, brought it up to about 4000, dropped the clutch, and had to take my foot off pretty quick because my *** end was all over the place.

I'm used to having the power once the turbo spools up, but I was surprised at how much torque the 7 had without it

Top-end power...

The only way to achieve maximum acceleration and power from a rotary is to upgrade the fuel injectors (secondaries), fuel pump, and then the ignition system.

I don't know about you guys but driving my car I seem to be always running rich even at 8,000 RPM which leads me to believe that the reason power seems... ... lacking at about 6500-7000 RPM is mostly because of the ignition system. I just think that the stock ignition system cannot keep up to the speeds of the rotors.

Just my 2 cents.

Mallard Duck,

I always look back and check my blind spot twice before changing lanes. Usually it's the A-hole SUV turning into you that's the problem.

You need to work on your "off the line" acceleration. I pulls FANTASTIC off the line if you slip the clutch at higher rpms. That's where you get those ultra-fast 0-60 starts.

TristanTII,

Yeah I spun a 360 around a tight corner in 2nd gear the first time I floored it (woops). You don't want to completly stomp it in 1st-3rd in tight corners.

Congrats on a fine automotive choice! I can understand the joy of these cars on wet pavement! My first test drive of my car was on wet pavement, and as I was pulling into traffic, I dropped the clutch a little quickly in 2nd gear, and did a 1080 Degree turn on a busy street! I aptly named my Rex "Chaos"!!! Have fun with your new beadt!!!!!

Re: Top-end power...

the stock ignition system is more than suffecient! they isn't abetter stock one out there! i am pushing 520 hp at the wheels on the stock system with no signs of problems from the stock igniton, in fac i took my ignition amp off (b&m new volt) and it runs better

I agree. I don't know why everyone always insists on 3 MSD's for FC's when they go standalone. My car is running pretty rich when I get into high boost, but I've never had any ignition breakup, even with crappy plug wires.

I know the feeling. I drove around in the yello t2 for an hour on friday, had the windows rolled down and big smile on my face. It was nice hearing the loud brap brap overlap of the porting and the pop of the exhaust between shifts. I even tried to get a white fc that pulled up next to me on foothill expressway to race. =]

(Jumping on the bandwagon...) I find I'm usually on the same page as you guys, and Jim's post-whoring saves me from writing answers.

The big thing about that post was that he upgraded fuel and thought he wasn't getting ignition; in reality he needs more air. He's down on power because he's flooding the motor.

Get it tuned, including swapping out the O2 sensor. With the NA motor fairly stock, you should be in the mid to low 20s.

Yeah, we got a little off topic.
