Question Performed Banzai's Coil mod. - Coils not toggling...

I performed the "FC Coil Modification for APEXi Power FC Harness Adapter Kit Installation" on Banzai's "Tech Support" page.

Banzai Racing Home Page

Keep in mind, I'm not here to bash Banzai at all. I followed all instructions to perform this modification. What I am now experiencing, is the T1 coil is firing for both T1 and T2 coils. T2 is not firing at all. When tuning, Steve Kan figured this out. He said it is as though the coils are not toggling correctly.

(S4 N/A coils. Modified S4 TII engine.)

Any input?

I was one of the first adopters of the Banzai Power FC adapter in a 2nd gen. I had Banzai perform the coil modification over 3 years ago. The trailing coils worked fine from day 1 and I've never had a problem with it since. Either you have bad parts somewhere or something went wrong during the modification.

I'm thinking the parts are bad. I may just have to get some other trailing coils. :-/

I would guess that you have it wired wrong. Take it apart and follow each wire per our instructions. There are hundreds of people running modified coils without any issues. The set up is one igniter per coil, it eliminates the toggle feature. The only way for the T1 coil to be firing both T1 & T2 is to have it wired wrong, a faulty part would only result in a coil not firing.

Exclamation

I've wired this thing correctly three times now. Even replacing old wires with new ones. After investigating a bit further... I've found this...

That indicates that you have wired it wrong.

I don't think you quite understand. Igniter #1 fires coil T1, igniter #2 fires coil T2, it is impossible for the signal from the PFC to igniter #2 to get to coil T1 without incorrect wiring.

First off, I wired this the same way every time.

This was the coil that was not firing at all. This probably would have put off a burning smell... The fact that this coil didn't produce a smell tells me that this coil has been fucked for a while.

"Firstly", You didn't notice a huge glob of crap hanging off the side of the coil when you were re-wiring it those three times? Secondly, a non-functioning coil will not cause the other coil to fire for it. Thirdly, you said that the T1 coil was firing for both T1 & T2 and not "toggling", which is impossible if wired correctly. So it sounds like your desciption of what was actually happening is severely flawed.

Your coil failure has nothing to do with any flaw in our coil modification instructions.

The glob was hidden. I decided to remove the T2 coil and found it far at the bottom. Good hiding spot... I don't know the pulse patterns for each coil, so T1 probably was not sparking for T2. "Toggling" was the word thrown to me when Steve had first noticed it. I am more than sure that this coil was screwed, even before I first tried to modify it. I am not blaming Banzai AT ALL.

A simply timing light will tell you when the coils are firing. If that is not available use a spare spark plug. Verifying trailing coil spark is part of the installation instructions. http://www.banzai-racing.com/S4_PFC_install.htm

20. Start your car, and verify you have spark at the trailing coils.

Sounds like you were given the wrong diagnosis from your tuner.
