Peeling Paint

Anyone else run into problems with their original paint peeling? I have an 88 AE and the paint has been peeling down to the original primer alot lately. Similar to many other late 80's, early 90's white and silver vehicles

I am not sure if I will have to strip the car, or just paint over the original paint.

Anyone know?

The paint is not adhering to the factory primer, Best solution is to have the OEM paint Sodablasted (stripped) and then a primer-surfacer (PPG K-36) followed by a repaint

That's a common problem with the 10th Anny paint - Mazda isn't known for killer paint jobs to begin with, BTW.

A good body shop will be able to recommend the best solution.

If you read the Brian Long or Yamaguchi book they talk about the new paint process setup for the 89-91 years. They rotate the car as the paint is applied for even distribution. They also used a different paint setup as well I believe (3 coat or something like that).

Your right thow, the 86-88's tend to peel if you don't use polish and wax (ie moisturize the paint).

Me Too!

This is kind of funny. I just bought a 10 AE where some of the paint was peeling. I was starting to wonder if someone had done a bad repaint sometime in the car's past, but this more closely matches the description. I can see right down to the primer. Has anyone had any luck painting their car themselves? I'm thinking of doing this, but I'm not 100% sure what all is involved. Can I just sand the peeling spots and then apply new layers of primer, paint and clearcoat over the remaining factory paint that is still good?

Yes mine is peeling right in front of the scoop and some on the sides. I thought about just having those areas done but a full paint job maybe cheaper in the long run.

With the painst age also come another problem.

Slight impacts or damage to the body causes the paint to come off in large chunks

I too was wondering if anyone had any luck priming over the peeling spot and then shooting it with paint.
That was my plan.

Yep, on my 91 TII the paint is very scared of the primer. The paint keeps falling off. Must be because it is scared of the car

I had a friend with a 91 mazda that was white. Their car looked about 10 times worse than mine with the peeling paint. It was a scary look into the future.

No, because the problem will just pop up in another spot later.

Ok, so if I need to strip the thing down, what do you guys suggest?
Am I going down to the primer, or bare metal?
What is soda blasting?
Is this preliminary task somthing I can do in my garage?
Gimme any info you guys have.

Here's a bump cause i want to know too!

BTW what would be taboo to paint a 10AE? Thinking of adding some blue pearl to the clear coat if I repaint.

I personally think that the blue pearl coat would look great. Still white, but with the subtle pearl in certain light.
I really don't think that is a sin. There is a guy on the forum who is gonna paint his AE black. I also saw one that was yellow on EBAY.

In my eyes, it is sacriledge; BUT it is your car and you can do with it what you want. Just don't expect everyone to jump up and congratulate you. In fact you can probably expect alot of FLACK

True I mainly got the car for AutoX and as a backup to the Scoobie. I'll just paint it neon green with a carbon fiber hood. Add some Tire Flies, huge metal wing and a huge NOZ sticker on the hood.

The white isn't too bad just the rims are ugly as sin. Wish my Scoobie had the same offset rim I'd throw on the Anthracite Prodrive P1's.
