painting the "sport" wing??

hey has anyone tried painting the sport wing or the areo flares??

reason i ask is i have a black s5 NA, and it needs a wing bad!! , i just picked up the s4 sport model spoiler and areo flares from a junk yard for 10 bucks , but they dont quite go right since s5 follows a single tone paint scheme

the sport wing is the "squishy" small wing that comes off the back of the car, do u think the paint would stick and look smooth if no one touched it??? or is the wing too rough to paint??

It's too rough it wouldn't look right. You'd have to sandblast it or sand it really good before hand.

Every time I've ever seen one painted, the paint has cracked. Remember, they flex at high speeds by design. Maybe theres some kind f paint that flexes and doesnt crack, I dont know.

I got my sport with the wing already kryloned, and yes it will crack and look like crap. I would stick with black. All the sportys areo pieces( rear wing back tire deflectors and front outer lip pieces)were black, no matter what color the car was. So black would be the stock look. BTW the sports had the lowest CD of ALL S4's with the areo package as described. It was .27 I belive! WOO HOO

Maybe if you add some flex agent or whatever to the paint, you would'nt have a problem. I'm not a paint and body guy by far, just an idea. It seems to work well for Saturn.

You need to talk to a professional car painter. There are specific paint types that can be used on flexible parts like that. I've seen cars that have wings like that painted from the factory.

Yeah, they make special formulas for bumpers that are supposed to resist cracking when the bumper flexes.

I've never seen any in a form that you you can just pick up at an auto store though, you'll probably be betst off taking it to a body shop and just having that chunk painted if you can.

We're talking about this wing right?

I don't see how it flexes, mine is pretty hard.

Side deflectors? I don't know man I've only had the car a month. The PO has done a lot of work and modifications on it.

BTW "Flex Additive" is only designed to give the paint additional flex during the first installation. The paint eventually hardens nearly the same. Although I am sure there is some way of doing it because Saturns LOVE to flex and their paint doesn't chip.

Is the Saturn paint more of a gel coat since those panels are plastic/fiberglass?

I don't know the drag characteristics of each stock wing, but I'm sure the 88 wing and the s5 wing aren't completely useless.

Nowhere near as hard as steel, which is why you have to use the right paint or it'll be cracking before too long.

c'mon you know what i mean. no, the other stock wings are not useless, but that one provides the least drag. although i don't recal what it provided for down force, i'll get back to you people on that...

Actually, Saturn paint really isn't even paint at all... It's even a bit more than gel-coat.. it's more of a gel-coat over basically tinted plastic.. The trick of a saturn is to make the whole body panel the color, so if it does get scratched, it's still going to be the same color.. Not really practical in this case.. (note: this is all hear-say from a saturn-owning friend of mine, I never really cared enough to look )

what you may be able to do is to put down a gel-coat on it, then prime, then paint, then clear.. but it will most likely ultimately take away a lot of its flexbility, making it less useful for how it was designed, pushing your Cd back up into the .29/.30 area.. just like everyone else..

I'd still talk to a body shop guy, but that's the direction I would head...

i have tseen those kinds of wings on 240sx and they are painted they will still spider crack if u squish them too much tho... hopefully the rattle can holds for a whil till i can get the whole car professionally painted.with a flex agent added...
