Painting / Powdercoating

I painted the entire engine and then everything I attached to it is powdercoated please see this thread:

Scroll down to the second set of pictures.

If you have any questions let me know.

I'm gettingthe steel IC pipes I made powder coated with the chrome caot stuff, but, the only drawback is that the chromecoat Powerdoatings usually spiderweb real bad after a while. But IMO, still looks better than rusty mild steel pipes!!!

If you are going to paint the aluminum parts, my advice is to bake them in the oven after the paint tack dries... about 1/2 an hour at 175-200 works pretty good. (but it does stink up the kitchen a bit) The ex used to bitch everytime she came in the house and smelled it... I have an extra oven rack that i hook small parts to with wire so that they are hanging from the bottom of the rack, paint them in the garage, and then pop them in the oven. It makes the paint cure faster and also makes the paint a bit harder so that it won't flake off everytime you bump it with something. I only do the non- alumin stuff.. brackets, pulleys and things like that... But it will work for the aluminum too, I painted the aluminum engine cases on my rd350 and baked 'em and they still look great!!

Personally, I hate painted aluminum anymore though.... there are two things you can do that IMO look much better than painting it... and that is to polish it.. or bead blast it. If you have an air compressor, you can get a bead blaster cabinet for less than 100 bucks that will fit the intake manifolds inside. Polishing... thats a lot of work, but the results are much better as well.

When i buy a car with a blown motor to fix and sell.... i bead blast all the aluminum parts and clean and dress all the hoses, wires and the interior of the engine bay I paint all the steel parts black and bake 'em. It gives the illusion that the car just came off the showroom floor under the hood. If i had it to do over.. I think my TII would simply be clean and new looking.... I don't lift my hood for too many people anymore after i caught one of the idiots i showed my engine bay to trying to steal my car outside a local club.. Mr. Glock made him re-think his position... but that pretty much ended my days of showing off all the polished parts on my engine......

why don't you simply buff them out

a friend of mine and me are very well equipped to do these kind of job and I'm really pleased with the result.

and this was BEFORE we ordered most of our stuff

if your patient, this looks definitely nicer than painting

my 2 cents

Here's Zkellers old engine that we polished everything and painted the non-aluminum parts

the newer version is even better, as he blew that one up... and we did some more work while it was apart

yeah.. but ya gotta buy the tools or pay the man.... me, but advice is free!!! We use felt bobs in different sizes to get into the small spaces. Some on a die grinder, some of the really small **** uses a dremel tool!

that's what I thought! I tried this method, but maybe the felt bobs weren't as good as yours cause we didn't get the same results...

Gotta try this again

Yea I did my **** up nice too. I just finished painting the water pump housing, it looks amazing. Its just a temp thing though, my TII manifolds, my water pump housing and alternator are going to be powdercoated, along with anything else I can take off. I can't take the engine out, so im hoping a trip to the pressure washer will remove all the grease on the main bar underneath the engine, along with all the grease on the side of the engine too...

I was going to paint everything in the engine bay red and black, that is, until i saw those polished parts on the motor yearsofdecay posted. I would really like to do that myself but i have no idea of how to do it. Could you please enlighten me on how to polish that stuff and what i need to do it?

Powdercoating and Black Hi-Temp

Here are a couple of pics to show what I mean. Motor, UIM, and LIM are S5 Jspec and front cover, waterpump, harness, etc....are S4. I painted the engine and tranny all black. I then had raspyrx7 (TeamFc3s) do all of my powder coating.

The exhaust manifold, turbo hotside, and DP have all been hi-temp ceramic coated by AMR coatings.

I like it. It justlooks a little different than the usual two tone. Yearsofdecay polished my TB for me and it is absolutely gorgeous. Very very shiny!!!

Thanx

Michael
