Thumbs up Painted my car in my driveway,"No Joke"

Of course having done autobody and paint for 25+years didn`t hurt!!!

I hit a deer, or should I say it hit me, at about 65MPH, took out the whole right side!! It was quite a disision whether to fix it or not, just carried liability on it as it was getting so old and such high miles!I found all the parts in the wrecking yard, and my wife loves the car, so off I went!! 87 N/T was bluish silver metalic, never did have a very nice paint job on it and I had to paint half of the car anyway. Ended up being PT Criuser silver with a lettle red and blue pearl under the clearcoat!!!

Took the bumpercovers, mirrors.doorhandles sunroof, and hood off and painted them separately in the carport, the the rest on a windless morning before the wind came up!! I`ve painted cars in paint booths that came out worse than this did!! I figured that I would have to cut and polish it latter, but it looks fine the way it is!! Already had two people want to know if it was new and what kind of car it was. Just goe`s to show us all how the styling of the F3`s is holding up!!!!!

HUMMER

Too green, computer wise to post picks and if I E-mail them to you they will take up the whole screen!!!

Painted several cars in our driveway when I was a kid, parents are still pissed! Back then we used laquer, cause you could wet sand your screwups. Did you use a HVLP gun? Too bad you can't post pix.

I'd be interested if you were able to get around the health hazards.

Bought a book on painting only to discover besides sanding & primering, you really need a sealed paint shop and a mask/air pump giving you fresh air to avoid inhaling the toxins

Which paint system did you decide on and what were it's features?

Thanks

way my friends stepdad did it for hsi motorcycle
cover up all you dont want to get any speckles (its a possibility) on

prop up all of the pieces on sawhorses and **** so theyre in the air and you can get 100% of the what you want sprayed
prop open garage, shove 2-3 fans so they suck and blow out

oh yeah do some dusting or get rid of that crap, let it settle. make sure nothing is around you that could be dusty
get a compressor
get a spray gun
get one of those clothish masks

however he did have maybe 4 tiny tiny bubbles or pieces of dust that you had to feel for. it was pretty damn good i thought
bike looked great
burgundy reddish paint, w/ color changing metal flake (rainbow i guess, looks sweet w/ sun shining)

you do that here and you'll get hauled away so fast and slapped with a fine that would make your head spin.

We used to wet down the floor before shooting the color so dust and crap didn't get blown into the paint. Sounds wak but it worked.

Question A question for a 'Pro'

My '91 is Brave Blue a dark blue pearl, the paint under the clearcoat especially visible at the edges of the hood fenders and headlight covers looks like it is all scratched or cracked!

A detailer told me this was due to age and the engine heat and that the only way was to strip it down to the primer and re-paint otherwise it would just come back

Thoughts and comments appreciated!

Boy, really hard to say without seeing it, I really doubt that it had anything to do with the heat though!! Even without seeing it though I would say that you are S.O.L. trying to fix the problem without repainting!! Sorry, not what you wanted to hear, right????

I thought you might say that

The problem is, when the car is washed and polished it looks great, only upon really close inspection and if you know what to look for do you see the flaw.

A friend of mine said the other day that if I considered the way the car looks now and compared it after a new paint job, most of the uninitiated would see less then a 5% increase in how good it looks... hardly worth the expense! I guess that I'll have to learn to live with it.

One other thing, what wax would you recommend, Where I live the weather is much like Seattle Wa.

Thanks,

Hard shell wax if you don't like to wax it every month (that green turtle wax stuff). Kanuba (sp??) wax if you like a better look.

Only took me 3 years to figure out your not suppose to let the wax dry before removing it.

Still can't get that polisher I bought from the autoparts store to work right though. It just doesn't take the wax off withough scratching the paint.

Getting closer...

Spent a bunch more hours this weekend polishing and waxing just the hood an fenders trying to come up with the best combination to make the dark blue really shine! The previous owner must have taken it through atuomated car washes, the scratches are deep and numerous!

Using Mequiar's #2 fine cut cleaner followed by #9 swirl remover then #7 show car glaze finally topped by Mother's pure carnuba it's getting closer!

Still many scratches and swirls, but better. Yesterday I ordered an new polisher, a Porter Cable 6" random orbital (7424). It should arrive in about a week, then look out, if those scratches are in the clearcoat then their toast

I HOPE!!!
