Paint question

I am wanting to know if anyone has had their car repainted recently, and if so did you change from factory color.

I have a 91 Red convert, and was wanted to have it repainted to a graphite thinking maybe the dark grey like on the tahoe's, maybe more metal flake, or a perl coat to make it different.

Just trying to figure out what the cost should be, so when i go for quotes i dont get the shaft. And I will be looking for a good paint job, door jambs, trunk lid etc.... So that when looking around it appears as that is factory paint. The body has no rust or dents, current paint is in good shape, so there will not be any body work needed.

Thanks,
Pete

What about under hood and engine compartment? If want a PROPER color change done, it will cost quite a bit.

I just had it done to a replacement FD. Had it changed from montego blue to Dark Shadow Gray (that's the Ford name, i believe - mazda has the same color, but theycall it something different).

Anyway, I pulled the engine, and took it to the shop. It was $2,000 for the color change, including engine bay, door jams, trunk, around the sunroof, etc.. \

Cost to tie up wiring harness and remove stuff like fuse boxes, ABS box, etc.. and get it out of the way for painting - $100.

Cost to fit, smooth, prep, paint, install 99 spec bumper and lights, $500.

Total - $2,600.

I would say he did an excellent job. on a scale of 1 - 10 i give it a 9+ . He aso completed the job in the estimated time - which was like 5 weeks ( i think, something like that anyway).

Two pics i've put up are here
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...&page=10&pp=15

I'm still working on putting the engine in, etc.. and getting it on the road. when i do, i'll have more/better pics.

Silver93's price is probably what you should expect. I got a number of quotes before deciding to paint my car myself, and 2500 was about the average, and was also the price quoted from a reputable shop that I know would have done a good job. I was going to go maroon to shadow silver.

I'm doing the whole thing for less than half that much in materials, but it's a lot of work and a lot of money in tools.

Since I didn't want to go so crazy on the setup I just went with a darker "tint" in the paint then factory. It looks nearly very dark at night and nice in the day. And only cost me a little bit more to do (I have connections).

its very dependent on where you live and how good the shop is. but if you want it done right your best bet would be to save up go to classic car shows and ask owners of cars with paint jobs you like where they got their paint job done. classic car enthusiasts usually know where the best place to get a good paint job.

Great thanks for the replies. I will go to a local shop here that does good work, uses PPG paints and top notch materials. I don't want to pull the engine and stuff, so willing to pay a premium for that work to be done for me.

I know when i took my truck over there he quoted 5K for a complete paint job, that insluded pulling the truck down to frame, applying primer + base to frame, and then putting it all back together and fitting all the panels, painting everywhere. (even under bed and inside the cab) Of course my truck also had numerous layers of bondo, rattle can primer, and more then a few dents/ding/scratches.

My goal will be to shoot for 2500-3K for a new paint job.

Thanks,
Pete
