The o2 sensor wire. Green, long, square, one pin plug that resides somewhere in the vicinity of the passenger side of the motor.

It's actually almost directly behind the motor, up against the firewall. It took me a while to fix it but you can't miss it. I've got a dollar that says if you just bought this car and you plug it in it'll flood the engine though. :P

If you can't find the O2 wire right away, you might have to find someone with long skinny arms to reach around behind the engine and grope aroung for it. Its back there, but ya gotta want it!

Richter - What's this about the O2 sensor causing flooding? Damned if that didn't just happen to me. Put on a new O2 and now I'm having a hell of a time just getting it cranked.

Every one I have ever seen was green, unless I just suddenly went color blind..

I gotta call BS on that, although who knows what kinds of software bugs in the ECU we have at this point, lol...

The O2 sensor isn't even outputting ANY voltage on a cold start, so the ECU wouldn't even have an input at that point...

I'm new to the Rx-7 world so maybe it's just coincidence, but when I bought my FC, the o2 sensor was disconnected - finally read a manual and found where it connects to, had it started, shut it off - connected the sensor and it wouldn't start again. Less than 5 minutes elapsed time. Maybe it's not related, but it sure seemed like it to me. My understanding is that if the o2 sensor reads too much oxygen it'll send a message back to richen up the mix. I know I have some serious exhaust leaks, so my theory is that it was getting air backwards up to the sensor, which said "ooh, this is lean" and dumped more fuel. I don't know much about RX-7's, I'll admit that, but I'm a pretty decent troubleshooter. Maybe tomorrow I'll start the car, let it idle, then plug in the o2 sensor while it's running and see if it dies.

I think what you guys might be having are shorting problems with the sensor wiring- it likes to chaff on the tranny, flywheel inspection covers, etc, and then the center conductor shorts against the outer shield, effectively killing the input and whacking out the ECU...

If it were shorting out then you'd get a 0 resistance from the input lead of the o2 sensor to any ground on the engine though. Oh well. How far is coldspring from Dallas? Maybe you could look at it with me, I've got a lot of work to do to get this car back in shape.

Not necessarily- there are TWO shielded circuits in the O2 run, sensor side, and ECU (harness) side. They split at the connector...

Coldspring's a long way from Dallas. Hailers is the guru up that way, among others. If I would ever let anyone besides me touch my car, he'd be the guy

Thanks for the help, I may have to look him up and see if he'll let me peek under his hood, just so I have something to compare it to. I'm still trying to sort out the differences between this and the little B-series 1.6L engine I've got in my Capri showcar. I'm getting some help from a friend of mine, but his toy is a '68 Camaro, so you can figure on some serious differences in how his engine works and how mine does.

The ECU only looks at the o2 during cruise and I (think) idle conditions.

No other time is the O2 used.
