overheating problem????

today out job searching and after the first stop, my "add coolant" light came on and I got confused, then I noticed my temp gauge was at about 7/8. I parked the car and coolant was overflowing out of the overflow tank.

after letting it cool a bit, I refilled the radiator with coolant to get home, and on the way It made it back up to 7/8. This is really messed up, the system was flushed about a month ago, and I'm not even driving hard(I can't shift above 4500 or it grinds )

after it sat at home for a while I added some water wetter to see if it might help a little. I drove down the block and it was at 1/4!!! then i drove a little more and it started going back up, so I went home, and by that time it had made it to 6/8 p the gauge.

what the hell is going on?? its an 87' N/A

any help would be great

87's had bad overheating problems. i had a 87 and it over heated alot. sell it and get a 87 TII. or a s5 na jk flush your coolent system. change your thermostat and put a new radiator in. thats what i had to do to keep my old 87 from over heating.

Check your clutch fan too, it may be bad...Spin it by hand a bunch of times. If it starts freewheeling, its bad,

what do you mean "freewheeling"?? if it spins really easy and doesn't stop spinning quickly?

I flushed the radiator about a month ago, and when i bought it, it had a somwhat new radiator(it still has it). Its one of those brass OE replacements. It doesn't look very good though.

where's a place I can find a cheap radiator? all I need is one that will keep it cool untill I sell it in a few months( I'm rebuilding my other 87' ) How about good condition used radiators?

if it's comming out the overflow bottle... chances are the engine coolant seals are gone and you need a new engine...

The brass rads are crap - find an aluminum one.

How can you tell if the radiator is bad?

Could overheating also be the result of a bad oil cooler??

how much does a replacement oil cooler cost?

My car is doing the same thing somewhat. I got a flush and a new water pump (some old guy talked me into it) and it started runing at about 50% all of the time. I may need a new radi. too. I have a 87 GXL

Btw, it takes a while for Water Wetter to mix into your system if you're just dumping it right into the system. It would probably take an hour or two of driving for it to disseminate fairly evenly...
