Overboosting?

Hey, I was thinking about getting a manual boost controler (and a better fuel pump) for my car and knocking the boost up when I was going to race. However, my car has to last me a while, I can't be blowing the engine any time soon. So I was wondering if its that bad on my engine (or turbo) as long as I turn my boost down when I'm done racing. Also, if I did turn it up, what should I turn it up to? Thanks!

P.S. My car is a '87 TII w/ about 80K miles on it

Boost doesn't have to be high for long to blow the apex seals right out the exhaust ports..

If you are going to do something liek that, you need a fuel computer set to add fuel as a function of boost over what the stock computer can handle.

You can't just knock the boost up for track night and hope it holds together, cause you'll be trailering it home.

Most people can add an S-AFC to their car and get away with 11-12 psi or so, but depending on how high you go, you may need more tech than that.

another theing to consider.. the more boost you run, the more stress you put on the engine, the less mileage you will get 'ttil it blows, no mater how well you tune it.

My buddy with a single turbo, 450+ Hp 3rd gen thinks if he gets 30K miles out of his engine, he's gotten away with murder!!!

If you NEED this engine to last a while, don't race it But you don't need a fuel computer to turn the boost up. Kep it around 12psi and make sure the fuel pump is up to the job. The stock pump might do okay, but I would go with a Walbro or something else.

if you NEED this engine to last you because you have no other form of transportation, get a new car. Once you start modifying these cars, they WILL break on you. So unless you have other means of transportation i suggest not modifying anything on it.

The stock pump will not support 12psi. An upgrade is mandatory at that boost, which is also pushing the safe limits of the stock IC.

Also is it some what accepted that the 550cc injectors start to max out around those boost numbers.

I am trying every method I can to get my car not to blow.
I bought a Walbro and had my 550's cleaned and flow tested.

My next step will be an SAFCfor sure to get my AF's set but 720 secondaries might be in my future if the AF is too scary for my daily driver.

Thanks for the info guys. It doesn't look like I'll be uping my boost anytime soon. It is my only means of transportation and I'm still paying it off, thats why I need it to last. Thanks again guys!
