NV Opinions wanted on TII motor

So i would like to hear people opinions without flaming please. So i recently found a local junkyard selling a complete s5 TII motor with wiring harness (also ecu i think). they said it started and ran like its supposed to and turbo boosted as it should but they said no matter how long it ran it would continue to smoke like a chimmney. i felt the turbo and it had incredible shaft play so its junk as far as im concerned. So im wondering if $250 for this setup is a good deal or not. Also I would like to hear everyones thoughts on how hard it is to rebuild this motor as i would have every intention to before its ever installed. possible streetporting when motor is being rebuilt aswell. Also i think im decently mechanically inclined but have never done anything this in depth.

Did they say which color of smoke? It'd either be burning coolant or oil. Oil, and it's a steal. Coolant, it's also a steal.

I'd definitely buy it.

yep, i pay that much for decent core short blocks and you're getting a full long block.

What are the odds of something being damaged internally like rotors or rotor housings?

and can average joe successfully rebuild and port a motor?

if it starts and idles smoothly then odds are the internals are fine with the exception of an iron possibly being cracked causing an internal coolant leak.

yes the average person can rebuild one of these engines, if you pay close attention to the condition of the parts being used.

well i called the wrecking yard to confirm price and i worked out a sweet deal to get the complete engine, wiring harness, ecu, mass air flow sensor, and tranny for 300 bucks. pretty bitchin deal i say.

Now, NA is much more forgiving.. But I built a motor literally on my parents' garage floor and it lasted 3.5yrs with very thin coolant seal channels and it kept running until two of them broke [and a 3rd was going to break at any time]. All I had for assembly instruction was the Atkins video.
