Operation : Make 18 y/o BBS wheels look new again

So I was getting really sick of my wheels looking like crap.
At first I thought I would take the wifey's wheels off her Mazda 6 and put them on the vert, but I decided to try to make the BBS wheels look better.... Im glad I did.

Before:

Process:

Then of course once I was done, I got into the Wash / Clay / Wax phase -
It didnt turn out too bad for a 18 y/o vert...

Really nice vert you have there. I was gonna have my BBS wheels powder coated black and shine those lips up- liking the gunmetal too, though.

Are your tails smoked?

It was hard as hell, but its round for the most part. I screwed up on one wheel, but I will redo that one next weekend.

The LCD is an Eclipse AVN unit. I have 2 JL 500/1 amps in the car right now with 4 Kicker Square soloberic 8's. - the front has Eclipse components, and the rear has alpine components.

I am in the middle of building a fiberglass enclosure where the spare tire area is.
It just seems to be taking a lot longer then I wanted

I learned a lot building my last enclosure - See pic below (I am hoping to outdo that)!

Nice. I need to learn how to build boxes/enclosures, throwing a big, slide-around-and-break-stuff box in the back just isn't cool anymore

BTW like the wheels too.

When you make a FG enclosure let me know. I'll buy a duplicate off you.

Too bad you have no taste. BBS vert rims are easily the best *STOCK* wheels available for the FC.

Yes they are. I can't figure out why this thread isn't titled " How to Paint your Wheels".

Hey, XRobber, were you unhappy (sick of my wheels looking like crap) because the wheels are poorly maintained or in poor condition, or unhappy that the wheels look because they are 'old style' so you painted them?

My vert wheels look dynamite when they are clean. When they are dirty, they look, well, dirty.

Those wheels are YOUR wheels, so of course you should do whatever you want to make them look like *not* crap.

I'm not criticizing the look (looks ok to me, nothing special), just the reasoning behind it and the description.

Bottom line, if you didn't like the look when they were original, a couple bucks of wheel paint probably won't help in the long term. The will look like crap with some wheel paint on them. And those wheels will have NO resale. I just bought a set of 16" S5 turbo wheels that have been painted black for chump change. If they had not been painted, they would have been worth far more.

Hey, nice looking vert, the wheels look fine good luck with the car.

Here is a tip: It is next to impossible to mask that edge in a perfect circle, so don't try. Just get it close, then after the paint has been thoroughly cured, put each wheel in turn on the rear. Jack up that corner. Block the other three wheels and let the car idle in gear. Use wet/dry sandpaper (1000 grit) to wet sand the outer polished edge right up to the painted center. This acts like a lathe and allows you to get a pretty much perfect edge with perfectly circular edge. When you are done, clear coat the entire wheel, color and lip. Obviously you cannot do this on a car with LSD. In this case you can use the front wheel of your other car (Mazda 6).

You should probably have someone sitting in the driver's seat for a just in case situation.

Good luck!

?? Umm.. I actually LOVE the vert wheels. Mine looked like shlt.
If I was unhappy with the wheels, I would have bought a new set. I like the wheels... (especially the weight), but the previous owner did not take care of them properly. The aircraft stripper and paint made a huge difference.

As crazy as it sounds, the poster above just gave me an idea for a poor man's lathe...but one would need an adapter to hold on to whatever you're machining. On second thought, probably not a good idea. BTW, I wouldn't hold my hands near a spinning wheel because of the lug nuts and mesh catching a finger.

I am planning on doing close to the same thing here in about a week. Only difference is I am polishing the lips and painting the center black. I plan on documenting the process.
