Can any vert comment on how much you'd actually use this feature? Or is it a case of either top up or down?

I've decided my next Mazda will be a late model Turbo Vert. I'm lucky enough, that in Aus you can import manual turbo verts for a decent price straight from Japan. They really are awesome cars.

I've never used it.

I think it's easy enough to do, but why?

You bought a convertible. Drop The Top!

I tend to just drop the whole top whenever I can! Even in light rain on the highway!

it depends on what you're doing. If you're just cruising around, drop the top. If you're going to race or doing any type of street racing, go targa. The extra comfort of knowing that part that's up has a roll bar is worth the effort.

I drove w/o top panel once but didn't feel so much air. Since then I usually drive full top up or down.

I generallly drive with the top down, but if the weather is really cold, or it is a very long trip, the targa mode is a good choice

I thought it was the removable section, that contains the reinforcement for the roof. The rear section has pretty much nothing.

Please correct me if i'm wrong.

no, there is a big re-enforced metal C shaped beam, built into the rear section.

The Targa section is just fiberglass. The Rollbar/C bar in the rear top section is where the main strength comes from.

Yea the targa portion contains no reinforcement whats so ever, unlike supras or any other hardtop targa, which you can see a major difference in stability...
The only reason there are laches on the targa is to creat a seal for the rain and wind like everyother convertable..... In a way the targa is good, but it also has an additional step to put the top completely down...
On s4's you have to pull the top down all the way and then get out of the car and press the button for the targa to collapse. Unless you have an s5 or 90+ which you can press a button from the drivers seat... I guess they forgot to move the button when they switched it from RHD to LHD....

Yeah I have a turbo vert and its the best swap donor in my opinion. All verts should be turbo. Best all around 2nd gen you can get it the vert/t2.

I find it very easy to reach the targa latch while sitting in the drivers seat. You just do it at the first stop of the top when retracting the front latches.

Exactly Icemark! I recently got a vert, and learned that trick almost immediately. Being as tall as I am though, I can stretch to it from the driver seat though.

I like the looks of the targa mode, but do think it's a little bit of a hassle to take the section out. I do the same, I'm more likely to have the entire top down for the shorter trips, and targa for the longer ones in some cases.

Well Im only 5'11" and that **** is a mission to press from the drivers side, cus you got to press it and slide it up... I've done that a few times, but I usually just remove the targa when Im about to leave, or if its like a one way trip like for work, I just leave the top up....

Woah, wait a minute.....I own a 90 vert. Where is this driver side button to lower the targa portion without getting out of the car?? I'm a puny 5'6" so I'm having to get out of the car to go to the passenger side release button. If there's a much easier way to lower the top, I'd be extremely interested to hear.

I love having the option of putting part of the roof up. When I lived in PA/DE, I drove with the top down until the temps were less than 40F. From 30 to 40F I usually ran it in targa mode. The rotary puts out so much heat that I car always stayed warm AND I got fresh air and sky.
