Once my driveshaft starts to vibrate....

How long to I have before the U-joints fail completely?

First it was an annoying tick tick tick sounds. now it's vibrating pretty decent at any speeds.

Where can i find a driveshaft for an 86 N/T Rx-7? And how long do i have before this sucker fails?

Is it not possible to replace the bearings in a constant velocity joint? The reason I ask is that I used to own a 240Z and my driveshaft started vibrating, then the idler shaft on my transmission just shifted, stopping me from moving the vehicle in any direction. Remember, these cars are old and the N/A's transmissions are notoriously weak, so you may wish to replace the bearing ASAP. Be much cheaper than replacing the entire driveshaft.

From what i understand these driveshafts are not rebuildable.

sorry bud ..he's talkin U-joints not CV joints..the car is rear wheel drive..drive shaft and u-joints ...Relysis..if you know that the u-joint is bad..why are you waiting for it to fail?..IMO I would be lookin at gettin it done now before you find yourself broken down somewhere ..nip it in the bud now..it will be cheaper than a tow call (and damge done by a U-joint failure)

you could drive for 1000's of miles, or it could go today. no way to predict.

I wasn't sure about the replacing of U-joints and if you had to replace the whole thing(driveshaft)..look through the forum classifieds ..guys here always have a "spare" one they are willing to part with..not completely sure but I may have read about guys "modifying the drive shaft so that they could replace U-joints ..somebody will chime in if that is possible,Good luck to ya..

My NA driveshaft has the front u-joint replaced (came that way when I got it), so it is possible.... may just be expensive

Lots of driveshaft places rebuild them with replaceable u-joints.

We do this quite frequently at the shop, costs about $300 usually.

My friend's 88 SE started vibrating like that when his u-joints started going, he drove on it for about 2 months before his driveshaft completely snapped at the front u-joint. When it broke, it broke the shifter housing completely off the top of the transmission, the only thing holding it on was the gear shift rod. Now he not only needs a new driveshaft but a new tranny too.

I suggest stop driving on it now unless you want to buy a new tranny as well..
