Question Once again I need an oppinion on the value of a car...

OK, I am seriously trying to get this car because I just miss my sport so much and this is the closest thing I can get to it. Its an 89 GTU painted red. A friend of mine wants 800 for it. Its been in two crashes prior one is recent and the damage is minor to moderate on the body. It will have to have some body work and paint done on the front and a re-alignment of all the front **** I guess. It needs a new sunroof of which I have three usable panels to choose from but none are red. The interior is ok but not gread the S5 stereo surround is a bit messed up the rubber is pealing off. The driver's seat has a few bad tears in it but I guess I could get them re-leathered or vynled. It has around 142k miles on the chasis but has a rebuild engine from four years ago and likely has under 35k miles on the engine. It runs strong and revs fast compared to my Sport and S5 TII. The front wind shield has a crack in it but I have a spare to replace it with. The front headlight motors are stuck on so they drain the battery if not unplugged. Its got removed cats and stock cat-back which sounds good not to mention I have a good set of true duals to put on it. Its got a sloppy shifter so it needs bushings which I have from my sport when I installed the short shifter. It has a broken oil pressure sending unit. Other than that it needs a driver's side tail which got smashed. Its got a new battery and thats all I can think off right now. Oh wait the drive'rs side door handle is non-functional but I can repair it as I have a pair of handle sets that I could use.

Bottom line its 800 dollars for a working 89 GTU with a rebuild. Its got problems but nothing over the scope of my skils or that of a body shop.

well make sure the subframe isn't damaged, I hear they can be a PITA to get right, or replace.... I've seen strong running TLC'rs go for $500 - $1000 just depends on what its worth to you, since its in a reasonable range IMO.

Yeah I would say the same thing... with front end damage, I would be very very concerned about the front subframe and its mounting locations on the body. If either are bent, chances are very very slim that the car will ever handle correctly again.

Price wise, (if the sub frame checks out) then $800 seems pretty good, but a touch high with all the body work needed and 145K on the body to start with.

800 sounds good, but i agree on chicking out that subframe, I bought my 86 base for 900, with 99000 original miles whole car in mint condition, 16inch borbet wheels, racingn beat cat back and bonez cats. I thought it was a steel but it had been in a front end colision and my right front wheel sits farther back in the well then the left does, doesn't affect drivablitiy but it's just one of those little things

Take it somewhere...Well, that's what I would do. But, if it checks out...800 is a good price. Besides, it doesn't sound like you have to put TOO much money into it. Considering, you already have most of the parts that you need!

Usually the easiest way is to measure from wheel hub to front bumper. With the wheels facing straight it should be the same distance.

I didn't think you really needed and answer, but yes... a measurement from any underbody location on each side should be fine.

Sorry about the multiple bumps Mark. I just wanted to be 100% sure. Because if its dammaged and that way or measuring isn't accurate I could have just thrown away a lot of my money. I'm really tight on cash and it just got tighter as I think I blew the engine on my 4 banger. Who would think you could blow a motor taking off from a light at a normal pace. Stupid boingers. Thanks though Mark. I appreciate your help.

And wankel7 lol I dont think they look at vins but the suspension is not the same on S5's as S4's so they would probably notice the difference. And I don't want to get sued for fraud.
