oil pressure too high?

My oil pressure is reading about 60 during start up and stays at around 40 after that, and goes back up to 60 when driving.

It is a stock 88' turbo II and I was just wondering if this is a bad sign or what.

Thanks
Marty

p.s. I did search...didn't get the answer I needed

That sould be fine. There are race engines that run well over 100 PSI.

oil viscosity can affect pressure too. i dropped noticable pressure when i stopped using 20w50 (got caught up in the hype). i went to 10w30 and it put me right where it's supposed to be.

With a fully HOT engine, AND using an aftermarket MECHANICAL gauge like a simple/cheap SUNPRO, you should see approx 30 psi at idle and when driving at approx 3000rpm you should see 70-80 psi.

The stock gauge might be suspect since it's fifteen years old or better and probably been shorted to gnd or had unusually odd voltages applied to it in its lurid past, so it is NOT DEPENDABLE for and accurate reading. Even the factory service manual (FSM) tells the mechanic to use a MECHANICAL PRESSURE GAUGE to determine the oil pressure. See FSM.

Oil pressure can also be affected by the filter from my expereince. Better (or higher) with the Mazda OEM than others. It will also vary between the 10W30 and 20W50 as stated.

uhh dude

are you using the stock oil pressure gauge? My N/A reads like high 30s at idle on the stock gauge but my autometer reads mid 20s.

At idle after warm up my fc runs a little over 30 and under highway driving load between 40-50. My car has a wix filter and I run 20w-50. It runs very strong for a na. Any problems with those numbers.

Not really if your looking at the stock gauge. If looking at a mechanical aftermarket gauge I'd say the high isn't quite high as it should be, but not worth tearing an engine down for. Just my humble opine.

I'd wager that if a mechanical gauge was patched in temp, the high would really be in the 70 range. Just an opinion.
