Oil pressure rapidly dropped on a new engine!
Maybe someone can help me figure out why this happened. My engine in my 88T2 just got rebuilt well actualy just about everything was replaced.(every thing but the intake manifold) Anyway he was doing some last minute tuning to my car because I was supposed to get it back today... He said the brakes were still soft, even after we replace the brake master cylinder. While he was driving it the oil pressure just suddenly started to drop. He had to have the car towed back and were not sure what exactlty happened, can anyone help?

Could be the gauge, or sender unit. The oil pumps that come in rotarys are pretty bullit proof, but they do take a dive every once in awhile. Also, what happend to your last motor? If the bearings whent out in it, and the oil coolers and lines where'nt cleaned...could mean some serious problems. CJ

MY guess is the O-Ring in the front cover.
Either way, its either moderately difficult (or simply annoying) to fix, or otherwise outright HORRIFIC.
And by horrific, i mean a second rebuild.
If a oil seal gave on the rotor, then thats a rebuild.
Probably not that though.
I bet its a improperly installed o-ring.
Make 'em fix it if someone else did it.

I cant imagine even buying a 86-88 RX-7 without getting a new fuel rail first.
There are too many stories like this to ever let this happen.
Car fires are just too vicious dude.
Its like they do more than just damage ou car badly, its like your engine was VANDALIZED in ways that are only expensive or a pain in the *** to fix!

Try this...
Go ahead and get your engine started, go to your oil line coming out of your front timing cover and try to squeeeze it. It should be as hard as a rock. if its solid pressure, then u might have a bad oil pressure sending unit, but if the oil line pressure is weak, you might have an O ring that walked away from your front timing cover or your oil thermo valve in the center of the eccentric shaft might be stuck open...

Judge Ito hints at this..........the large bolt that holds the lower pulley could have been under torqued and might be backing out. Put a ratchet and 19mm socket on it and with the car in gear, see if its loose. To do what you describe it would have to be almost finger tight and backing out. If there is any torque at all, thats probably not it. Ask the guy who did the rebuild if he thinks it might be the front cover gasket. Is he the same guy that was driving the car for a brake check? Plug is on the oil sender real good? Is there about 12v on the wire to the sender unit with it disconnected? Put on one of those SunPro oil pressure units. Cheap and they have the right adapter to fit the sender hole(50percent sure on that). Do you have any oil pressure??????????????showing on the gauge????? I can continue on guessing. How about the set screw in the side of the oil pump was not staked and fell out disabling the oil pump???? So you really wanted this post bumped up to where it should rightfully be, so BUMP

Yes the guy who rebuilt the motor was the same one checking the brakes. I don't know what the gauge is or was showing bcuz right when it was dropping rapidly he pulled over and turned it off, but thank you guys for the help...

I had a similar problem just a few months ago. I was driving along in my 88 TII and noticed the oil pressure guage was reading zero. But it was still driving fine, I didnt notice oil leaking from the car. But I still had it towed to my mechanic, cause I was afraid to drive it if the engine had no oil.
Luckily, the problem turned out to be a bad oil pressure sender. SO I suggest checking that sender out, and if its not working get it replaced, if you feel you need that guage working. I hope your problem is as simple as that, good luck.
