oil pressure question

this oil pressure thing is starting to make me confused

at one point it used to read at 60 psi or a little above at idle and anything above 1800rpms would read at 110 or so

few times even went OUT OF NORMAL OP PRESSURE
was running 20w50 at the time and figured that might be the problem so switched back to 10w-30 didn't fix it
ended up putting a little MMO in the oil gave it about 500miles problem solved back to normal

now when I first start the car up oil pressure is around the 20-30 mark at idle and around 50-60 at about 2000rpms or above

but once it warms up the oil pressure starts to drop quite a bit

around 15-30psi at idle and at around 2000rpms it can ready anywhere from 40-50 but if I rev it up to about 3000rpms it reads the full 60psi like normal

and from what I undersatnd it is supposed to be 30 idle 60@2000rpms
also yes I know the stock unit isn't that accurate but I don't think this would be a accuracy problem almost think it is something else

oh yeah this is with 5w-30 oil right now and yes I know that is thin on the cold side but we are dipping into single digits and only every now and then get above 30 degrees least when I first put the oil in and wanted the oil to warm up a little quicker

so can this really be just stock unit not reading right

or could the bypass valve on the oil cooler OR the thermo valve in the e-shaft be bad?

maybe some sort of blockage?

any ideas?

not really wanting to ruin the motor right now

wouldn't think to much of it but there have been times driving at 1800rpms I'm at 30 psi hit the gas rev it to about 2500-3000rpms I'm at 60

heck at 2000rpms it can read sometimes at 30 as well
but most the time when warm it sits around 40-50 but at 2500 or above it sits at it's normal 60

a cold engine will have higher oil pressure (it's more viscus)

30 idle and 60 above is normal.

if your 0 at idle its prolly a connection or sending unit.

oh btw 110 isn't too bad of a thing

mazda bumped up the pressure to 120 on the 3rd gens after their racing division found they need a bit more for higher rpms b/c the eccentric shaft was being starved.

they have oil pressure mods to up it but i don't believe ppl that live below 6k need it.

the 110 was normal for cruising at one point

I'm really wondering if either that sender is just that messed up

or if something else is going on now though

this lower oil pressure isn't what I want on my car right now if this really is the case

The procedure for checking the sending unit is in the FSM. Do it.

alot depends on the type of oil filter too.
