oil pan sealer

talked to the guy at one of the parts shops we on this form deal with, I asked him if tey sold gaskets for the oilpan, he said that they use grey permatex. I put my pan on after using this stuff and was thinking that I used to much. I took the pan off AGAIN and I was right that stuff was in the pan itself. Cleaned it all off put a smaller bead on on it went. Now my question is before I put oil in it an start it up is there any advise to the problems I might have and should I take it off and buy a gasket. Any and all help needed I just do not want to tear something up. Thanks Eric

You have to check the instructions on the type of sealant you are using. If it says "Not impervious to oil" then it wasn't designed to be in contact with oil. Other than that, don't over tighten the pan or it will warp the flange.

I always use a cominiatoin of a gasket and sealer. Never had a leak so far. My favourite sealant is Permatex "copper".

You should have used Permatex RIGHTSTUFF. It is idiot proof which is why I use it. NO need to wait for it to cure before applying 100% torque and filling with oil. I have NEVER had a leak with this stuff and used it on everything from my oil pan, front cover, and on other engines.

I had problems with regular RTV due to leaks that eventually developed. Rightstuff has shown almost 100% sucess rate in leakdage.

Rotorsportsracing has always used the permatex grey sealant on my blocks (no leaks). I once used the orange sealant on the oil pan and it leaked like an SOB soon after.
