Oil Pan is off..
resealing the oil pan, so it is currently off....what are some of the things i should do while its off?. i have a few questions with your feet out the front of the car looking up at the bottom of the block
1, whats this thing it lays side ways towards the rear of the engine in the pass side corner ( oil control valve ?) does this ever need testing/replacing/adjusting?
2, the bottom of the front cover its a gold bolt. is this the Oil thermowax pellet? i should replace this as the engine has 150k miles?? and what parts need replacing?
3, people talk about the front eccrentric bolt off the main hub..that just leaks over time because of the seals/rings.. correct? nothing ever needs replacing if it isnt leaking?

that's the oil pressure regulator, they usually last the life of the car. some people upgrade them ONLY if they do alot of track or drag racing. upgrading equals having higher oil pressure. and it doesn't require replacing/adjusting/rebuilding

my suggestion?
put the oil pan back on and don't worry about the other lubrication systems. i have seen more people eff things up by worrying about reliability than just leaving things alone. the lubrication systems are actually one of the more reliable aspects of these engines aside from the cooler lines.

yup. the front gold bolt is the front oil pressure regulator. if i was you, all i would do is make sure the pan is clean and doesnt have any crud in it and make sure the strainer is clean. also i had a motor go from the strainer getting clogged up with rtv that fell into the pan from someone going ape with the stuff. so dont be so liberal.

RTV is that orange gasket goo stuff, it comes in tubes (like toothpaste). Should be available at any parts store.
If you plan on autocrossing or track driving an oil pan baffle plate is a good idea (Racing Beat, Mazdatrix, and others sell them). A few places sell baffled oil pans (Pinapple Racing and ISC Racing). If you're not racing then don't worry about it, but there's no real downside to it, other than effort to install it, potential for more leaks, and cost.

If you really, really want a project, then you can shim your pressure regulator. If you can get it out of the engine then it only takes a few minutes.

Otherwise leave it alone.

Wait, so according to this thread, the sideways thing on the rear housing is the oil pressure regulator, AND the brass bolt near the front of the engine is the oil pressure regulator?

Also, anyone know what size wrench you can use to get on that sideways oil pressure regulator in the back without taking the engine apart? :P My monster crescent won't even give me a 1/6th turn on it.

Yes, there are two regulators. The front cover regulator bypasses at around 145PSI or so and I am pretty sure it's there to prevent blowing up oil cooler hoses if you run a crazy thick oil or have a malfunction in another part of the system.
The rear regulator is your main regulator. I think the size is 28MM, but check my writeup to be sure.
