Oil pan gasket changed, car is freaking, help!
Hey guys, well, today I changed my oil pan gasket and now when I start my car, I get the cold start up (to 3K RPMS) and I have *never* gotten that before.
Also, the car doesn't idle anymore after it drops from 3K, and backfires like CRAZY.
This is what I did, reading the Hayes (sp?) manual.
It said to take off the (electric I thought) cooling fan, and I wondered why, but I didn't want it anyway. So I took it off. I then undid the 2 sensors that go into the oil pan, and took it off. Put the gasket on, put the silicone on, and put the pan back on. I had the battery disconnected for about 6 hours.
And I DID put oil back in
I am really wondering whats happening, if anyone can help me, it is much appreciated, I'm afraid to start it now

The cold start does not occur if you have the car in gear when you start it, or if you tap the gas as it is climbing to 3K. Is it possibly that everytime before you started the car in gear? Or when you saw the rpms climbing, you tapped the gas and the tach dropped again?
The backfiring is probably because you are running rich at idle (every rotary does, so do not fear). Once the car is warm, does it still backfire? My car always backfires when it is doing its fast idle (1.5K) until it is warm. Are the sparkplug wires firmly seated to the coils and to the plugs? When did you last change the plugs(they could be fouled and no longer making good spark?
Have you lost any performance?
Just think about those things.

Hey, I just changed the plugs about 3K miles ago, so I know it couldn't be those. I've never had the 3K start thing since I bought the car over a year ago. I have a turbo timer so it is always in nuteral. I was getting LOUD backfiring, I am use to little bips and blops and booms but I thought that I should wait until tomorrow this stuff is so loud!
Anyways, after the 17 or so seconds of 3000K, it drops down and dies. I dunno, before this, it was fine.

Okay, I plugged the fan in, and I get a normal startup, but it won't idle at all unless I give it gas and keep it at 2K. If that could be considered idling. Anyone have an ideas?

While working on the oil pan you yanked off a vacuum line. Look around the area for a loose vacuum line then find the nipple for it and your done. If that happens to not be your problem you may scream and yell all day!

Yeah, you're definately right. I pulled off the intercooler and there was the brake booster hose laughing at me; mocking me. I figured it was a vacuum hose after I figured there wasn't anything I could have possibly screwed up. Thanks for the reply.
And there are no more oil leaks around the gasket

About the 3000rpm. On the 86-88 models there is one thing that will kill it and make it not happen at all. That thing is the water temp switch on the bottom of the radiator, l/h side. Two bullet connectors there on the switch. If one or both are not making contact, then there will be no 3000rpm at start up with a cold engine. Maybe you touched one and made it make contact? Ther is another possibility. There is a neutral sw on the side of the transmission. When in geat it makes a ground circuit to the ECU causing the 3000rpm cold start to not happen. Coulda touched the connector that lies on the left side of the transmission and now it makes contact. The sw itself is on the right side of the transmission.

Yeah, I think I was messing with that connector at the bottom of the radiator because I read in a thread that would stop it. I disconnected that thing on the back of the intake manifold because I thought that would stop it, and it kept going.
