iv takein two oil pans off and there was no gasket just that silicone **** is that how they are

 

no they should have proper gakets.....

 

I was told that most rebuilders dont use the gasket as they tend to leak after about a year. they say silicon holds up much better. I can contest to this as my oil pan started to leak after i changed the gasket 2 times after about a year

 

That's an opinion thing. There are gaskets for there, but they leak if your flange is fubared at all...so some people just silicone the crap out of 'em.

Don't bother using a gasket.
The best sealant out there is HondaBond.

 

Every time I have come accross a pan without a gasket, it is always leaking. I think it's in rather poor taste to save the extra $10 and not use the gasket if you are building an engine for someone...hell, the gasket is already in the Mazda gasket kit.

I've always used the stock gasket with a layer of silicone on each side and never had a leak...Not ever. A trick is to make sure that all surfaces are TOTALLY CLEAN and then use a washer on the bolt head to help distribute the load. If you dimple the mating surfaces (takes forever...) it will also help prevent leaks by trapping sealant.

 

Well I've never seen or had one leak that doesn't use a pan. Most shops won't use one either. I guess really it depends on who did it and what they use as sealant.
Really, the gasket makes no difference. It only provides an additional place to leak. Think about it, you are trying to seal twice as many surfaces.

To each their own really.

 

i use gaskets on all my rebuilds, a few of my rebuilds have been on the road for over a year and not a single leaks from any of them yet.

+1 for gasket with a layer of silicone on each side.

most people do not use a torque wrench on the pan though, this is where i can see people having issues with the gaskets leaking since irregular torquing will result in gaps, especially if it is overtorqued with a gasket in place.
