oil leaks from ?

my car leaks a lot of oil. i think it only leaks when its running though, cause if it sits for a long time it will leak a lot slower, but when i first turn off the car and get out and look under the car i can see it dripping from many areas. i think its comming from this hose (see pic) but im not sure. (in case my pics dont work, its the hoses going to and from the stock oil-cooler.)

can anyone confirm this.

can anyone tell me how much its gonna cost and how hard its gonna be to fix.

thanks,

no sir if it was from that hose, it would leak all the time, I had the same problem your culprit is more than likly the front cover gasket, very pricy to get someone to replace usally around 600 bucks, atleast thats what my mechanic said, so I was like ****, and replaced it myself, though if you have general mechanical knowlegde it shouldn't be to hard for you, the worst thing is not letting the torring, needle bearing fall....you can get more info on it here.... http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm , if you haven't already you must remove, a/c, P/S, air pump, alternator, fan, fan shroud, OMP, Front pully, Oil pan, water pump and that is just to remove the front cover bolts, then you must remove like 6-10 bolts I forget how many, and its a bitch to get the bolts on the front part of the oil pan and removing the old gaskets took awhile too, if you think you can't tackle that DON'T try serious engine damage can result, if you do, don't for get to use a pry bar to hold the clutch in......

I'm telling you if it was your oil lin it would leak all the time, if you really wanna know, hose down the entire engine at a local do it you self car wash, put that engine degresser all over the front cover and under the main pully, don't get the air filter, or coils wet, spray it down (don't even pull the lever just the nozzle pressure do the work) look in between the water pump and the block have one person rev it to 5k to 7k and watch that spot or anywhere where the front cover meets the block, also if you can see clean oil (no dirt or grim in it just liquid) collected on the front lip of the oil pan....I had the same problem about avery 3 tanks I would need to add a quart.....if this is on a turbo refriane from boosting as it will not get the right amount of oil to the turbo because of lost oil pressure.......

well yes, though the pic above looks just like my oil cooler line and its not leaking, believe me its better to catch it now than wait 2 to 3 months, BTW N/A or Turbo?

and if it was coming out of that line you would see fresh oil around it and I don't.....

Belive me my mechanic was telling me it was leaking from the rotor housings which is another possiblity but unlikly.....then he hosed it down and had me rev the engine to 5k and he saw the culprit imediatly........

That's just a leaky oil cooler line. They typically start to go in the area between the frame rail and the radiator.

Change the oil cooler lines NOW - when they finally go, they go BIGTIME. You will lose the contents of the oil pan in about 5 seconds, makes a HUGE mess, and can cause engine damage!

It's not the front cover gasket, BTW. It would only be a slight oil mess if that was the case - the oil isn't pressurized inside the front cover, just through the passageway to the front oil cooler line. If that O-ring leaks, it's an internal leak that drops oil pressure. Trust me, I know about front cover gaskets 9 ways from Sunday - I had to learn the hard way there!

Anyhow, get a set of oil cooler lines NOW. It's a messy, thankless job to change 'em out, but it sure is nice when your'e done. Corksport and Mazdatrix have the cheapest new bolt-on stainless lines. Or, find a good used set, but they will probably fail again sometime in the future.

Dale

Just to clarify this point... When my front cover gasket leaked, it would leak hardly at all if I kept her under 3 k. But if I ever got to revving around 6 or 7, oil would just begin to drip like crazy from the bottom of my oil pan (the oil would work its way down there from the upper part of the gasket, where it was really leaking--and it would only leak while running, while the oil pressure was up). The problem gradually got worse over the span of about a couple weeks--started out a small leak, ended up where I was afraid to drive, lest I leak too much oil. Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way as well. I suggest you not take it to a shop; I had a rather unpleasant experience when I did, and had to end up doing the job myself anyway. It was more time consuming than difficult.

Eric

you see my problem is that when i back out of the driveway i see many oil spots not just one big one. most is comming from the plastic gaurd under the car. but it goes as far back as the middle of the transmission. i think this is cause it "travels" with the speed of the car.

i just want to get it fixed to sell, does anyone have some used one that dont leak for sale?

mine is like that currently , just started this week, but it's leaking from a different spot, it's leaking from the point that the hardline meets the rubber lines, does anyone know how these two lines are attatched to each other? i need to get this leak fixed, it's getting worse- I have good pics of it, but i dont know how to post them, how do i post pics on here?

From what I know, you can't fix the line. You have to get a new one. They are a pain to replace. Especially if you don't have good tools and experience. I'm sure you wouldn't have trouble finding one for sale on this forum.
