well yesterday i started noticing that my 87 t2's oil gauge has been reading really low. usually its between 60 and 110 but now it it always under 60 and and almost goes to zero when i am idling! this just started happening yesteday, what could be the problem? i checked the oil and it is full. i sure hope the oil pump isnt going.

yeah i kinda have the same problem going. car doesn't seem to be failing because of low oil pressure though and it doesn't smoke or anything. could it be the gauge. like eclipse said i really hope the pump isnt going :\

i am hopin its just the gauge because the needle is all over the place, it never actually settles anywhere. it could be at 60 cruising at 2500 rpm than a minute later it will be at 30 at 2500 rpm. and when u start it when its cold it stays above 60 than slowly drops as it warms up.

well mine is more like at 30 cruising and at 0 or almost at at idle but when its stand still and i rev it, it does go up to 60. hey guys any solutions for this problem? i know some people recommend an aftermarket oil pressure gauge but what else can i do to verify it isnt the oil pump?

what kind of oil are you guys using? my dad's jeep did this when he used a lower weight oil by accident... ignorance is bliss... LoL...
The oil pump is driven by the engine and sits right behind the main pulley (and i think down... or maybe up... and its belt driven)... and if it starts to go I wouldn't think it would exhibit symptoms like that...

well if its belt driven i would imagine that it would just stop working all together and not slowly stop working. i think that our 17 year old gauges are on there way out.

oil pump isnt belt driven, its a chain. check the connections on your oil pressure sending units. watch the temperature guage. if it reads higher than normal, then you have low oil pressure. if not, its a problem with the guage.

Check Connections and or replace the sender unit. The stock guage is not to trust worthy. In my opinion; If the oil pressure goes up when under load or at a rev, and drops (even to 0) during idle, than its fine.

My S5 N/A would go between 20-30 at idle to 55-65 at cruise. The sender unit broke (just stoped reading, guage stuck at bottem peg), and when I replaced it, the guage read, 0-5 at idle and about 50-55 at cruise. <---Dont know how relivent that info is.. haha hope it helps..

hey that's my thread! yeah, after looking at the pump I didn't see any way in hell the pump could break except for a total failure scenario.
