Oil filler neck smokes...

I changed my oil and spark plugs after 1000 miles on my engine. I was driving today, shifted from 1st to second at about 3500rpm, and suddenly it sounds different (more bumpy and individual exhaust notes) and it has less power... so i get to work and leave it running (idles about the same) and open the hood. smoke is coming out of my breather on the filler neck, and some smoke coming out by the turbo (but cant see the exact source)...so I open the oil cap, and smoke comes ou t...constant light smoke keeps coming out. WTF? I dont get it...I hope this isn't going to be my second blown engine...this one only has 1000 miles!!! help!

Ben

Pressure in the crankcase is sometimes a sign of a bad turbo, the compressor seal can fail and let boost leak into the oil supply causing extra pressure and heat. It can also be responsible for a shitload of smoke out the exhaust. Anytime the engine is hot and you remove the oil cap (or otherwise expose it to atmosphere) you could expect to see some light steam rising out of there, being that ambient temp would be 30-60 degrees (this time of year) while the oil temp would be 180-220.

well, its definately not steam, and it has pressure, but its like bump bump bump in bursts, but not constant. My car definately has about half power, and it really sounds like a blown engine. I am pretty sure this will be the last, I can't do this anymore...student with two rebuilds already, and Ive never even been out of the breakin process. I will admit my first engine was a little thrown together, but this one was strong. I can't believe I threw away 8000 dollars for nothing in the end. I love rotaries, but I am in awe at how shitty my luck has been with them. I still haven't compression tested, but I am not going to invest too much hope. /end rant

Was any port work done to the engine? Sounds by that description as if a side seal has blown, possibly due to incorrect assembly or port work. A side seal will result in a pulsing idle that reminds you of a cammed out v6 or small v8, and will result in pressure in the oil system due to compression getting by the sideseal and into the oil.

CRXtoRX7 - I'd check the turbo before you panic. If Kevin says that's a likely cause, I'd listen to him

Well, if it's rhythmic with pulses, it's probably not the turbo, but one face of a rotor that's leaking compression into the oil system, via a side or corner seal.

I do have a streetport done by my friend. He used the same templates for his FC and it has ran strong for 15k+ miles. One thing about my engine, when we rebuilt it, I used a combination of new and old side seals, because I messed up on clearancing them so I just used some of the old ones. Its a jspec engine, and the previous owner ran it for 5k, I rebuilt it, it blew after 1k, I rebuilt it, and it blew after 1k. With this much experience, youd think my car wouldn't suck! Well in any case, my friend can't find his compression tester, but I think the engine is done. It still drive and idles though!!
yeah it is fully rythmic...there is a pretty good amount of pressure coming out of the oil filler neck, and it actually is smoking a good amount from the tailpipes. Vaccuum has always read about 16 while idling, and now it s about that but it dips in pattern to the sound....so like -----_------_----_-----_----_ [--=16] [_=14]...which seems like one face has no compression. Now, one question...could an exhaust leak before the turbo cause this?...because I have smoke coming from around the turbo, but I can locate it because the fan makes things difficult...

Thanks,
Ben
